Broad and vague laws for "online harms" and increased reliance on automated filtering are not the right answers to tackling illegal content online. Two prominent legislative and policy proposals tackling hate speech and onnline harms are being discussed in the European Union.

This article provides a critical analysis of a new law (the French Avia Law) and a policy proposal (The UK White Paper on Online Harms) to combat hate speech and online harms, and shows the difficulty to strike a balance between regulating online content and protecting freedom of speech.
