1. The significance of the ‘photographic journey’ in the three decades from the 1950′s is because it was at this point that photographers started exploring new areas of photography such as photographing desserts and open roads. it also marks the time when they were experimenting with colour photography as a medium.
2. He is seen using a 10X8 large format film camera. He used this instead of a digital camera as the large format camera can capture images with fine detail and is perfectly suited to wide shots. The camera is also on a tripod which makes it stable and allows him to move away from the camera. Also Digital cameras at that time may have not been able to produce as good an image as the the large format camera could.
3. Robert Frank’s book had such a huge impact as it showed what the 1950s were like in its purest form. in his book he showed from an outsiders view a nine month long road trip. He documented the culture that was evolving along the way. His book showed that they were living in a time that was going to remembered in human history, With the introduction of space exploration there was a vast feeling of optimism that everyone felt.
4. his work was from a very artistic point of view, he worked at a fast pace, his photographs were abstract, unconventional and he used cropping techniques such as framing to make his work unique.
5. He personally felt that the cities had to be approached In different ways. This was because unlike Paris which felt sweet and elegant, New York was full of energy and to feel this energy he had to get close to people, feeling their intimacy and confronting the flow of people to feel involved.
6. His key points were to be more aggressive, get involved and talk to people, take similar pictures, stay with the subject and be patient, don't take boring pictures and get closer to the subject.
7. British photographers have gravitated to the beach as the beach is seen as a stage where classic themes are played out. The people of the beach are performers, where you can record the eccentricity of them and the place, with the performers revealing something they wouldn’t normally do. The beach shows unguarded subjects, spontaneous and candid moments, family dramas, love and the disappointments of everyday life.
8. To me surface rather than soul means that an images look can initially grab the views attention more than the story behind the images. They are drawn to the image and then learn its meaning.
9. Stephen Shore’s road trips were about keeping a visual diary of everywhere, with including the people he met and the stores he went into, whereas Joel Sternfield road trips were a documentation of banal scenes and objects. Both photographers worked with colour photography, being one of the first to do so.
10. William Eggleston is regarded as the ‘king’ as he is the pioneer of colour photography. when he used colour photography it was not appreciated like black and white film. his use of extensive flash combined with colour, emphasises the impact the images have, which is something a roll of black and white film couldn't have. Eggleston used colour to bring structure to his photographs and convey different moods. His photographs show the changing culture in Tennessee and the rural south. He shows this through a variety of different scenes such as portraits of family and friends. He doesn't have clear answer to why he has photographed certain subjects but explains that he photographs everyday life.

Contemporary photographers
Didier Massard
Didier Massard produces very little work per year as he spends so long trying to perfect and tweak his images. As you can see from his images below they all have a whimsical and magical feel to them. Most people comparing him to painters as opposed to other photographers for the quality of his work. Every detail is perfect.
Francesca Woodman
Francesca had a very short photography career, dying at the age of 22 she produced a large volume of work of over 800 images. During her photographic journey she was always learning and figuring out other things about her and finally figuring out her identity. Most, if not all, of her images are self portraits capturing her self evolution.
