Reminiscing About Control-line airplanes, Model Rockets and Roller Coasters

I was out walking my dog last night and, in trying to get him to do his business without walking too far around, I stood in place (the center of the circle) and had him walk around me (his leash = the radius).  Sagan, named after Carl, isn't the brightest dog and didn't comply, (perhaps trying to be ironic?), but the event reminded me of a summer camp class I took when I was in 5th or 6th grade.

The classes ranged from model rocketry to chemistry to chess to (gulp) dungeons and dragons to many other nerdy endeavors. Just this moment I took a long walk down memory lane and paged through the 1990 Estes catalog, a catalog I knew cold when I was in 4th grade. Wow!

Quick detour: In the model rocketry class the instructors, who took their hobby quite seriously, took us out to the field one day and launched a rocket that was way way bigger than anything in the Estes catalog. The normal engines available to kids via the Estes catalog range from A1 to B to C to D1 for the biggest rockets... apparently these guys were into Gs or Ks or something crazy and they had a bunch of 'em. Here's an approximation.

Anyway, in this particular class you received a gas-powered model airplane kit, spent much of the class learning and assembling it, and then finally learning how to fly the crap out of it - inside a gymnasium.

The only funky thing was, they were known as "control-line" airplanes.  This isn't your grandma's radio controlled airplane.  Maybe I have that backwards.  The way you would fly these suckers was by standing in place and holding a plastic controller that had 2 wires (the radius) attached to the airplane.  Tilt up to go up, down to go down. The good pilots could do loop-the-loops and tricks.  Someone would start the thing off by throwing it and you'd stand in the center, strings taught, staring at this little plastic contraption and circle round and round, swallowing anything that might be working its way up your throat.

I get sick pretty easily. I never ride roller coasters, except the Scooby Doo roller coaster in King's Dominion, VA. Watch how scary it is:

Merely watching another kid do this flight made me sick to my stomach.  Imagine: it's bad enough spinning around in circles.  Now add a specific point in space that you have to stare at the whole time you're spinning around, the background flying by, and you've got yourself a vomit machine.

I explained to Maddy what this thing was because I don't think many people have seen such an airplane.  I've certainly never come across it since that class. But my explanation didn't do justice so here's a video of someone breaking the world speed record for "control-line" airplanes.  I can't tell you how much I love this little guy in his little shorts with his little glove and little holster dancing around the pole.  But damn if he doesn't have a stomach made of steel.

And here you can watch a pilot's view of the flight. This is outside so I think it's a bit less intense than inside a gym where all of the background is just a few dozen feet from airplane all the way around (thus giving the feeling of moving way way faster). I think I just vomited a little in my mouth...
