Practicalities of writing fan fiction
Two characters who never cross paths in canon do meet in your fic, albeit only once and briefly. They know some of the same people, after all. Then, several stories later, they meet again, primarily because one character now needs help from someone in the other one’s line of work and, well, it makes sense for that someone to be the other canon character, doesn’t it?
You posted that first story more than three years ago, and by the time your wip is ready to see the light of day it may be closer to four years. Not everyone who reads your new story will have read your old one. So is it better to ignore the fact that you already introduced the two characters to each other and do it all over again (be kind to your readers), or to have them remember each other from that earlier story (be consistent with your own headcanon)?
