Search engines like Google and social networking services like Facebook understand the craving for convenience. They provide free services and make money through advertising. Most people like this. Their real business is providing information about us to their advertisers; the services are the means to that end. Service quality must remain high if the companies are to remain competitive, but the service is incidental to the business of collecting and processing data. That’s why Harvard’s Professor Zittrain quipped, “If what you are getting online is for free, you are not the customer, you are the product."
