Mariah took a look at her phone to read the time. It was close to three in the morning and she was alone in her and Nico's apartment. She wasn't supposed to be alone. Nico had gone out and told her he would be back around nine. That was now six hours ago. He hadn't texted or called. She had promised him that she wouldn't worry about him, so she told herself she was not going to text or call him either.
He had left her in the office that was pretty much her study room. She was adding to her thesis as well as researching and annotating the research of other space scientists before her. He knew she could get lost in her schoolwork, so he made her set an alarm so she would stop and eat dinner. With a kiss on her head, he was gone, and Mariah didn't come out of her study haze until the dinner alarm went off. She heated up some Taco Bell they had the day before and brought it back to the office so she could eat and continue working. Her eyes grew heavy, and she glanced at the time on her phone. It was after midnight, and she hadn't heard back from Nico. She moved her work to the living room so that she would be able to hear and see him when he came home, but she could only work for another ten minutes before she started to worry. She stared at her phone for another twenty minutes before turning on a space documentary that she could watch until he came home, still looking at her phone every ten minutes.
Finally, she moved one of the chairs to face the door. She swiveled in it slightly as her foot tapped against her leg. This couldn't be happening again. He said he was going to ease up. He had been so good for months. She tried to keep calm as she heard his key in the door and leaned forward as he came into view. "Where have you been, Nicholas?" she asked softly, though her face was serious.
