“BS Tourism shines in their college”
Bachelor of Science in Tourism musters their competency through their different activities and their prominent graduates that’s conquering the tourism industry, Mrs. Luzviminda Tugade – department’s former chairperson – aforementioned.
Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Bachelor of Science in Tourism was founded in the year 1978 with a starting section of five – and until now – up to the time of their graduation. The program is a ladderized curriculum which provides students with specific skills and competencies to enhance their opportunities to work while studying (Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ official website). Besides, Tourism is a career where students work and earn at the same time due to the allotted opportunity for them to travel and have a glamorous job.
Furthermore, the program is right now more of Outcome Based Education or Outcome Based Learning which means that the students are exposed to more realistic competencies to array them with more skills. “For example students have this subject in tour guiding, so they need to go to a mock tour then do an actual guiding for them to be graded by the teacher of the subject.” Mrs. Tugade sampled.
On the other hand, the common stereotypes was answered by the interviewee wherein the huge number of people said that in Tourism, when they got older they’re not capable to have a job anymore which Mrs. Tugade disagreed. She said that an aging person in the Tourism Industry can get into the higher organizational structure towards managerial or supervisory level.
The school is a state university which is in the first place which is apparently an edge to the other schools offering the same program. Students are also exposed to a lot of off campus training that is linked to institutions – private companies, airlines, hotels, resorts, and NGOs. Students are paying extra credits for the exposure but it’s not a burden to them because it gives a lot of advantages.
Due to the edges of the Tourism in Polytechnic University of the Philippines there are prominent graduates here like David John Apigo, who is, the only accredited Korean speaking touring guide in the Philippines also, Nelma Goli, who is, an accredited tour operator.
Nevertheless an activity was upheld in the department, the Ms. Tourism Waters - a kick off activity that was related to the 26th convention that showed an advocacy about it. The activity revolved around World Tourism Organization’s annual celebration with the theme “tourism and water protect our common future”. Moreover, the department also held a poster making and essay writing contest. The activity was concluded last September 25, 2013 together with the celebration of the 26th annual convention in the Philippine International Convention Centre.
Bachelor of Science in Tourism is an efficient program for everyone who wants to travel a lot and entertain people. The program they hold in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is more edgy compared to other schools and they develop the competency of each student through their activities.
