Cup fungi (Cookeina spp.)

ATC - Mushroom Faeries - Cookeina
I've joined a group on Instagram where you complete 3 or more small trading cards every month that you participate and send them in and then receive cards from other members. You can find details about it here: pabkins.com/blog/ January's theme was 'Mushroom Fantasy'. This was my first card for that month, a Cookeina Faerie. The cookeina mushroom grows with its cap upside down! This piece is called 'The Alchemist,' and features the title character hard at work concocting potions. She uses these special mushrooms in her work, mixing magic and science to create all sorts of useful things. She's a bit of a hermit, usually preferring to work alone. Still, she shares her potions with other fairy folk, giving aid when they come to her. I hope this one found/finds a good home! Also, January's card sets are going to be featured in an upcoming ATC book, "Among the Toadstools"! So exciting! Picture completed in January of 2019. Media: Watercolours and ink on paper.

This is “#Cookeina tricholoma”, or easily identified as “hairy pink cup #fungus”. The Temuans (orang asli) of Peninsular #Malaysia are reported to use certain species from this genus as food, and also as a bait for fishing, where it is rubbed against the hook. My favourite kind of #fungi to look out for when #trekking in the #rainforest. .. .. .. .. #ForestFloor #trek #hike #hiking #NeverTooOldToPlay #NeverTooYoungToHike #funghi #CupFungi #CupFungus https://www.instagram.com/p/B7ASDoNhNmG/?igshid=1fkk9a1ttib15
It’s peak season for many kinds of mushrooms, but to find this unique species you’ll have to travel to someplace tropical. This cup fungus, cookeina, was photographed growing on the rainforest floor in Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Park. Like other fungi, it serves as a decomposer, helping to break down dead organic matter in the ecosystem. The pronounced cup shape aids in spore dispersal by causing raindrops to splash the mushroom’s spores out into the surrounding area, allowing the fungus to spread.
