Cookies are very important for a website to operate as it provides them a way to remember the users and increase their experience on the website. For Webmasters it is necessary to inform the users about the cookies, especially after the new GDPR guidelines. To resolve this in WordPress, webmasters are often using plugins which increases the risk as more plugins are going to slow your WordPress website.
In this post we are sharing an easy method to resolve this cookie problem for WordPress website.
What is cookie ?
Cookies are small text files which are downloaded to your computer, tablet or mobile phone when you visit a website or application. The website or application may retrieve these cookies from your web browser (eg Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome) each time you visit, so they can recognise you, remember your preferences and provide you with a more secure online experience.
Resolving cookie problem for WordPress powered website :
Step 1: Visit this website https://cookieconsent.insites.com/. you will land on this page.
Step 2 : Click on the download button and a new page will open check the fig. below.
Step 3 : Here you can configure the cookie options you want on your site.
1.Position : In this option you can set where you want the cookie ribbon to appear on your website. You have five options here – Banner bottom Banner top Banner top (pushdown) Floating left Floating right
Check as per your requirement.
2.Layout : Here you have 4 layouts
Block
Edgeless
Classic
Wire
3. Palette
Here you can decide colour for your cookie ribbon ,here you can choose from predefined themes or you can choose your’s. We recommend to check and go as per your choice.
4. Learn more link : This is an important option because here you can add the link to explain about your cookie policy. There are two options
Link to cookiesandyou.com( a default cookie policy page)
Link to your own policy(your custom page)
Our recommendation is use your own policy page.
5.Compliance type : In this option, you can manage what type of compliance you want to provide to your audience on your website. There are three options from which you can choose as per your site requirements.
Just tell users that we use cookies
Let users opt out of cookies (Advanced)
Ask users to opt into cookies (Advanced)
As per our site’s requirement we have chosen option one.
6.Custom Text : We have to show message with our cookie tab, in this option you can manage what you want to write as a message on the cookie tab.
This will definitely depend on the type of compliance you have chosen in the last option.
Step 4: One you have customized your cookie tab its time to finally put this on your website. For that please copy the code you get after finishing the customization which is on the right hand side of your customization option as shown in the fig below.
Step 5: Now let’s put this cookie tab info on your WordPress website, for that turn over to your WordPress website’s backend or dashboard, look at the tabs on the left and look for ‘Appearance’ in that the last option is ‘Editor’ click on that.
Step 6: This will take you to the theme files page. On the right hand side look for ‘Theme Header’ file it will be with “header.php” name and click on it.
Once opened this look look like this, if yes then you are on the right track.
On this page just below the ‘<head>’ please paste the code you copied from the cookie tab in the step 4.
If you have done that, scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the ‘update file’ option once it shows the message file update, it’s done and you have successfully added the cookie info tab on your WordPress website to inform people who comes to your website without using any plugins and so.
Open your website in a new tab on your browser and see the cookie tab will show.
We hope this helped you in your cookie problem on your WordPress site.
We love comments and suggestion to make our site more realistic.
