For the past decade, the team at the newly Rich’s-owned Jacqueline's Gourmet Cookies has celebrated the legacy of Liam Witt by supporting efforts to fund pediatric cancer research.
Young Liam was diagnosed with pediatric cancer at age 2, and he died of stage IV cancer in early 2011, when he was 6. While he was still battling the disease, his parents, Larry and Gretchen Witt, launched a major effort to support the funding of research for safer, more-effective treatments by creating the nonprofit organization, Cookies for Kids' Cancer.
Ten years ago, Jacqueline’s Gourmet Cookies’ began its relationship with Cookies for Kids' Cancer by contributing 96,000 cookies for the organization’s first bake sale, which raised more than $400,000 for research. To date, cookie purchases made through Cookies for Kids' Cancer have funded 91 research grants, leading to 36 new treatments and clinical trials now benefiting children diagnosed with cancer.
To continue the tradition, Rich’s associates and family members recently spent their Saturday sorting, labeling and packing cookies that were shipped to Richmond, Virginia, for a Cookies for Kids' Cancer fundraiser. By the end of the day, the Rich’s team had handled 15,000 chocolate chip cookies, 4,000 citrus shortbreads and 1,000 snickerdoodles, for a grand total of 20,000 cookies! Sales of these little desserts are sure to make a big impact on the lives of the #toughcookies who are battling pediatric cancer.
