Humpback Whales at Copper Cliffs Quadra Island lies just across Discovery Passage from Campbell River, British Columbia, and on it is a very special location known as Copper Cliffs. It’s actually a famous diving location. But I’ve never been diving. On board my boat, Snoopy, the brightly coloured cliffs stand out like someone spilled a box of crayons that melted in the sun. The minerals in the rock have stained it like a rainbow. Much as the divers like to look at all the sea creatures that live beneath the waterline, it must be pretty interesting for whales too. One day I came across a humpback whale and her calf who were also exploring the area. Page 13. --- Lionel Ayres, Orval ‘bear’ Huras, and Lawrence Galachené, Kist Canadians rearguards, who hope to provide an impregnable barrier against the Sault Rapids attacks in the first game of the provincial junior B finals being played in Copper Cliff tonight. Ayres is the big fellow who scored the winning goal against Hamilton last week to give his team the O.H.A. title.

“DISMISS CHARGE OF SHOOTING OFFICER,” North Bay Nugget. January 17, 1931. Page 12.  ---- Sudbury, Jan. 17 (Special) — A charge against Domenlc O'Connor, ex-member uf the Copper Cliff Police force, cf wounding his fellow officer and friend David Craig by shooting him in the leg early in the morning of December 29, was dismissed this afternoon by Magistrate Stoddart in Copper Cliff Police Court. O'Connor entered a plea of not guilty admitting the shooting but claiming that it was an accident .The shooting occurred at the house at 11 B Peter street, Copper Cliff, where the two men had been room-mates for several months. Craig and Romeo Rose, the landlord, both gave evidence stating that O'Connor had been somewhat Intoxicated but that there had been no quarrel and that It was apparently an accident, a bullet passing through Craig's leg when he grabbed the gun from O'Connor. Craig's wound was healed completely and he has been back on duty for several days.

“Slandering Kingston,” Cobalt Daily Nugget. April 20, 1911. Page 07. ---- The residents of Kingston always resent the title of ‘Kingston Penitentiary’ which the Dominion Government has bestowed upon one of its famous institutions. The Penitentiary is not now, nor has it ever been, in Kingston. It is in Portsmouth, an adjoining village. Yet Kingston gets a notoriety from the ‘Pen’ which the R.M.C. and Queen’s cannot overcome.

An incident occurred the other day at Copper Cliff which illustrates Kingston’s sad fate. The time-keeper at a mine there is a former Kingston boy. A foreigner, a laborer in the mine, asked the time-keeper where he came from.

‘Kingston,’ answered the young man, with pardonable pride.

The laborer brightened up and said, ‘My fadder live dere. Did you know my fadder?’

‘I don’t know,’ replied the time-keeper. ‘What did he do?’

‘Oh, he kill a man. He go dere for five years - been dere two now.’

The time-keeper believes that the man was too polite to ask what he had done.

“Believe Plot Nipped To Dynamite Frood,” Toronto Star. November 29, 1930. Page 03. ---- Finlander Under Arrest at Sudbury - Crown Asks Special Instructions ---- Copper Cliff, Nov. 28. - What is believed to be a plot to dynamite the Froud mine was frustrated here yesterday when H. Ekalm, 40, married, Finlander living on Burton St. Sudbury was placed under arrest. Had it materialized, it is said, the plot would have blown miners in the immediate vicinity to atoms and would have endangered the lives of all miners on the 2,400 foot level.

Ekalm was employed as a driller. About ten minutes before his shift concluded, it is alleged that he was seen by three fellow workmen, putting spikes in the tamping. The cartridge would have been used later in the day when Ekalm was at his home.

The accused was brought before Magistrate Stoddard last night and was remanded in custody without plea.

“Two youthful burglars, boys of very tender age, were before Magistrate Stoddart Monday afternoon on a charge of housebreaking. The boys broke into the I.O.O.F. hall at Copper Cliff on July 12th and stole a mite box containing $5.76. After being given a severe lecturing and a warning, both boys were allowed to go on suspended sentence on payment of costs and making restitution. The parents of one of the offenders, who has been up before, promised to send him to the farm for a year in the hope that he will mend his ways.

Surrendering himself to the police who had been on his trail for several days, John Lahti on Monday afternoon was fined $450.00 and costs in police court by Magistrate Stoddart. The car which he abandoned with a large quantity of liquor, which was concealed in two large suit cases in the auto, when he saw the brass buttons emerging from the busy on the roadway, was handed back to Lahti, but not before he had paid his fine and costs. Although the police believe that more liquor was concealed in the bush owing to the fact that the confiscated cans were rusty, none of the hard stuff has as yet been unearthed.” - from the Sudbury Star. “Copper Cliff Police Court,” Sudbury Star. June 28. 1919. Page 05. --- For driving a car with wrong markers, Howard Washburn, a Sudbury youth, was fined fifty dollars and costs on Friday afternoon in police court.

Less Keller was found guilty on two charges, one B.O.T.A. and the other of being drunk. On the first count he was fined two hundred and costs, and on the second ten without costs. Peter Griffin and Wm. Russell were in the same party. Griffin was fined ten and costs for being drunk, while the charge against Russell was withdrawn. When the police heard much noise and laughter coming from a room in the Central Club they went up to investigate. The door of the room was locked, but an entrance was forced and the three were found with the inevitable bottle. Keller was also charged with refusing to admit the police, but this and a counter-charge against the constable were both withdrawn when the police made good the damage. 

O. Thomson was also fined ten and costs for being drunk.
