🎯 Report on deepfakes: what the Copyright Office found and what comes next in AI regulation
On July 31, 2024, the Copyright Office released part one of its Report on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, focusing on AI-generated digital replicas, or "deepfakes." These realistic but false depictions, created using advanced AI, raise serious concerns about copyright and intellectual property laws, which the report finds inadequate to address the harms they pose.
While digital replicas have existed for years, generative AI has made them far more convincing. The report acknowledges positive uses, like enhancing accessibility or licensing one’s voice or likeness. However, it highlights deepfakes' alarming misuse, including scams, disinformation, and exploitation—98% of explicit deepfake videos online target women. The risks extend to politics, news integrity, and personal privacy, as AI tools become increasingly accessible.
