roo, @academicdisasterfic tagged me in the « four fictional characters that describe you » game, so here goes nothing!
1. valerie frizzle from the magic school bus: there’s only three rules in life: take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! i’m an educator at heart and a jump-in-feet -first sort of person. if i had access to a magic bus and a class of fourth graders i would 100% end up in weird places, learning weird science. first and foremost learning should be FUN, and i learned that from the frizz.
2. mame dennis from auntie mame. mame is a generous, kind, intelligent woman, who is also eccentric, chaotic, and mildly unhinged. her heart is in the right place, even if the results vary. she’s also not a woman you want to cross. i’ve modeled my life on being as much like mame as possible. in her words « you’ve got to LIVE, darling! life’s a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death! » also i would absolutely serve you a flaming cocktail.
3. fox mulder from the x-files: too much has happened to me for me not to believe. ghost are real (and they happen to like me) so why not aliens? i’m also stubborn as hell, hardheaded, unwilling to let go of something once i’ve focused on it, and dramatic to a fault. plus, i’m very very good at having long term will they won’t they romantic tension with someone almost my exact opposite.
4. eda the owl lady from the owl house: she’s got a shit past, a mildly debilitating curse, and a penchant for chaos. absolutely mildly unhinged, easily excited, but genuinely with her heart in the right place, it’s sort of like looking in a slightly distorted mirror. i’ve got a penchant for trouble, a knack for being in places i shouldn’t be, and issues with authority like nobody’s business. despite all that i think of myself as deeply loyal, and with both a decent head on my shoulders and my heart in the right place.
some perfectly imperfect characters for a surely imperfect person. stubborn and headstrong, a bit chaotic and certainly dramatic. i think these four could be summed up with « get weird with it. » there’s maybe a bit of theme here.
Interactions with the Glaive (Because of all your recent posts. )
send me a topic to write a meta about my muse on
(I might write anything from a paragraph to a whopping essay, but send me something you’ve noticed about my characterization or just something you want to know about my muse and I will write what I can!)
THIS GOT SUPER LONG SO I PUT IT UNDER A READ MORE, PLS FORGIVE ME.
Since I’m a stickler about organizing a proper timeline, I do have some very specific details about the Glaive, but personally, Cor and the Glaives, to put it simply, I don’t think they have a strong relationship.
Okay, let me start with what I know. The Kingsglaive were formed by Regis immediately after he is given the prophecy of his son’s fate. This is when Noctis is five, so, 15 years ago from the events of the movie/game. Cor has been working with the Royal family for 32 years, since he was 13. He has seniority even on the oldest of Kingsglaive members by almost double the amount. Even if some Kingsglaive are older than him, which I doubt since it seemed to be comprised of young people, I imagine Cor will be held with more prestige than any of them. Not to mention, Cor was once part of King Regis’s retinue.
Does Cor look down on them?
My belief is Cor doesn’t look down on other races in Eos, not only because my own personal headcanon (that which makes him only half Lucian and not full) but also because of a clear difference in his understanding of them being in Insomnia. They are not immigrants. The people from Tenebrae, Galahd, Accordo, and other places from the world, are refugees. Cor has assisted in helping many refugees evacuate their home country. It’s not explicitly stated, but it’s heavily implied, and it’s also mentioned that Cor is still doing this later on, after the 10 years of darkness.
To explain, an immigrant is someone who comes to a different country voluntarily, either short or long term, with intentions leaning towards settling down, and possibly abandoning their former country in exchange for the new one they immigrated to. The Kingsglaive do not talk about Lucis like they immigrated there. Even though they’re referred to as ‘immigrants’. They talk like they are refugees. The key difference is for almost any visitor to a foreign country, people come, voluntarily. The only category that doesn’t, are refugees, who come involuntarily. The Galahd people say many times that they want to return home, save their homes from the Niffs, and don’t feel like Lucis is their home, but that they are ‘rats’ living there. (At least, Tredd Furia said something like that, I haven’t watched Kingsglaive in a while so forgive me.)
Cor does not know what being a refugee is like, but he can sympathize and empathize towards what they must be feeling. I would like to imagine that Cor has a bigger world view due to his constant moving around. (Again, this is headcanon stuff, it’s not explicitly stated that he actually moves around a lot) Cor probably knows a bit more about different cultures, even though he’s not a Lucian diplomat or anything, he has most likely been around, even at a young age like 15, which gives me the impression he’s more experienced with other cultures. This seems very political, I understand, but, to be honest, the Kingsglaive movie was made out to be a very political based movie, as was most of the game, honestly.
Okay, so, he doesn’t look down on the people that make up the Kingsglaive, how does he personally feel about Kingsglaive itself?
Well, my assumption is it’s more complicated than he’d think. It feels a bit extra for them to exist, but, as far as I know, Cor doesn’t know why they exist. Cor was never told Noctis’s fate. The only people who are implied to know are Regis, Lunafreya, and later on Ardyn, but Ardyn was not told the prophecy about Noctis directly, simply the part about the Chosen King. The fact that it was Noctis was just how everything went down. So, Cor’s feeling towards the Kingsglaive was that Regis was pitying the refugees and wanted to give them jobs. He doesn’t know that Regis was doubling down on protection, and hand picking the strongest magic users he could find.
So, Cor does actually feel antipathy towards Kingsglaive itself. He feels like he’s being replaced, and his soldiers are being pushed to the side. This also doesn’t help because then it starts ramping up racial tension too. Like, okay, I know this is getting political, but if there’s a group of almost exclusively Lucian people, feeling replaced by a group of almost exclusively refugees, you can’t tell me someone won’t be the ‘they’re taking all our jobs’ guy in the crowd. The guy who sticks out to me is the Lucian guard that starts making fun of Nyx while he’s at gate duty. A lot of them are like that.
Cor is not like that, he understands that they need jobs, they need to survive, and they also need a place to be in Lucis, being close to the King probably would make them feel more comfortable about living in Lucis, although they don’t nearly have as much power over their situation. Still, Cor also has this deep seated feeling that he might be being replaced, and, well, you can see there’s some friction in their relationship. It’s not all tense and fighting, some Crownsguard get along with the Kingsglaive, and vice versa. Some are even friends. Cor and Drautos probably know each other fairly well, and their soldiers probably have to interact a lot.
Still, the Kingsglaive are also out fighting the war, while the Crownsguard, well, are the guards of the crown, right? So they are exclusively in the Citadel, guarding Regis and Noctis most likely. Cor is probably there more often than not, although he seems familiar with the countryside of Lucis too. His group is more inactive, although I assume he’s not (Cor seems way too strong and able to fight to just be a guy sitting around in the Citadel holding out tissues for Regis when he feels ill. ok.) and actively fighting with the Niffs. Maybe even with the Kingsglaive. So some Kingsglaive must know Cor at least a little bit.
Still. He’s the Marshal of the Crownsguard. If those two groups have animosity, there’s a lot of Kingsglaive that are going to associate him with all the hateful racist Crownsguard, and hate Cor by default. There’s nothing he can do about that. Too many people, too little time.
What’s Cor’s individual interaction with the Kingsglaive members? (aka, your actual question, plz forgive my annoying flavortext.)
Well, considering all my nonsense above, most of the ones that know him, give him a lot of respect. Even the ones that don’t know him, know not to fuck with him. He’s in a high position, has a lot of seniority, and well, at the end of the day, he’s fucking Cor the Immortal. Cor has a big reputation, that much is clear. If there is anything they talk about in relation to Cor, it’s his big ass reputation he totes around. No matter who it is, I have a feeling they respect Cor.
So anyway, lets divide it into three categories. Positive, neutral, negative. Positive, people who like Cor, consider him a leader, or a mentor even. Cor most likely has spoken to these people more than a handful of times. Neutral. People who don’t care about him, meaning they know him but don’t care to know more. Probably never talked to him, get a bit nervous when they’re addressed by him, overall just a general military hierarchical relationship. Negative, at worst they want him to die and assume he’s a racist Lucian like most of the Lucian’s that are hurtful to the Kingsglaive, at best they just hate him because that reputation he holds has given them a bad impression and assume he’s full of himself.
Cor talking with Negative types, he can tell. He can feel glaring, teeth gritting, murmuring, eyes on him, hateful tension in the air. He handles it well, because, well, he’s been in battles, he’s been around people who actually want to fucking kill him. It’s not a big deal when it’s just hate. Still, it’s not an environment you want to be in. So, he probably would rather leave those Glaives to Drautos.
Neutral is probably the same. He understands there’s no real relationship other than work, so, he’s to the point with them. He’s to the point with everyone, but, they don’t get much else out of him.
Positive, are people he probably knows or has trained himself. (I could go off on a tangent on how I don’t know wHAT COR’S JOB EVEN IS, but I will spare you, I promise, I just can’t help mentioning because this interferes with my headcanons all the time :p I honestly can’t say for sure what his job is.) Cor is a very hard mentor in my headcanon. Especially since it’s canon info that Cor doesn’t train the Crownsguard personally. Clarus does. Gladiolus says so. Like Monica, the woman with Cor at the beginning of the game. Gladiolus calls her “one of my dad’s best”. So, the Amicitia handle training the Crownsguard I assume. In Kingsglaive we see them training on their own, I don’t know who trains them, and I’d like to assume Drautos and Cor are both mentors. Cor is a harsh mentor, if the Episode Gladio DLC told me anything, he doesn’t pull any punches. :| He will absolutely fucking wreck his own student. Why?? I don’t know. I guess that’s just how he trains. Maybe he’s not as nice as I’d like to assume he is, but at the very least he seems reassuring and straightforward. It’s not like he just beats the shit out of Gladio for no reason, he only does it after Gladio fights Gilgamesh. And he praises Gladio a lot, as well as Prompto. He praises people who deserve it in his eyes. For Gladio, it’s because he worked hard, for Prompto, it’s because Prompto is doing this literally out of the Kindness of his Heart. Prompto is the only one not born royal, and doesn’t have to be there, but stays anyway, which is why I think Cor praises and flatters him so much in your short interaction with him. Not only that, but Cor can see some similarity between himself and Prompto, and wants to give Prompto what he didn’t have; praise and acknowledgement.
Anyway, I went off topic. Again. So, let’s break down who we know from the Movie, and how I imagine Cor would interact with them.
Drautos: Both higher position characters. Drautos is a captain, Cor is a Marshal. As far as I can tell you, I can only assume Cor has higher status. Funny enough, as far as I know, Drautos’s actor, Adrian Bouchet, is about 45, (at least as of making Kingsglaive) so, they’re the same age. Perhaps there’s a bit more they understand and relate to since they are peers. I feel like of all the Kingsglaive, they were the closest.
Nyx: Everybody calls him the “hero” and Cor knows of all people what it’s like to have a moniker that is used to taunt you sometimes, so he sympathizes with Nyx a bit. I don’t think Nyx would realize that though, since I can’t imagine they meet often. Other than Nyx being punished with gate duty again by Drautos, or something like that, Cor wouldn’t really see Nyx that much, but at the same time, he sees him probably more than anyone else, since Nyx gets demoted to Crownsguard jobs all the time, at least, by the looks of it.
Crowe: I feel like because she is so powerful as a mage, Cor might have met her for combat training. I don’t know how Crowe does with close quarter fighting, from the looks of it she wouldn’t need to use it. But she’s clearly very skillful, and Cor would like to help hone those abilities if anything.
Libertus: He really hasn’t interacted with Libertus. The only reason he knows him is because of Drautos. That’s actually why he knows most of the Kingsglaive. Cor trusted Drautos a lot because he could tell Drautos sympathized with the Kingsglaive a lot, and he knew where they were coming from.
Luche: One of the negative/neutral types. Luche is around Drautos a lot though, but, he can feel him sneering whenever Cor has Drautos’s attention. Tredd and the others he feels it too.
Pelna: Positive/neutral type. Cor can see he’s pretty intelligent and informative, but, everything is professional, and they hardly interact in the Citadel, so Pelna can only really nod his head and just listen to what he’s told.
That’s really all I can think of for now. :p Forgive my egregious list of nonsense that I spewed, I hope that made some sense. I tried to give it categories to clear it up, but it’s still a mess, bear with me. Thank you for sending ;3;
thanks for the tag @orange-peony! this is going to be embarrassing lmao
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? Dnd campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!

"Microfic": Bullet
genuinely i don't think i know enough people to tag one person per fic, so i'm just gonna list some people. many apologies if you've already been tagged. @softlystarstruck, @lou-isfake, @starlitsilvereyes, @ronbinary, @corvuscrowned, @cavendishbutterfly, @m0srael
thanks to @corvuscrowned for starting this trend and for tagging me, as well as @orange-peony and @avenueofesc! i started writing in 2021, so it's nice to take stock of some goals for the new year. i'm tagging @helle-bored, @secretartlair, @the-starryknight, @tackytigerfic, @cavendishbutterfly, @ronbinary, @starlitsilvereyes, @lou-isfake, @isamijoo, @americanmoths, @geesenoises, @bubble-gumhead, @rockingrobin69, and anyone else who wants to participate, so sorry if you've already done this!
★ finish my wips: i have an insane amount of wips in my gdocs (something like 50 before i opened kiss prompts) and in the vein of my biggest overall goal of 2022, i am going to finish them. no more languishing in my drafts if i can help it
★ leave comments: this year i’m really going to work on leaving comments on almost everything i read, even if it’s just to share that i loved it. comments are always really lovely to receive, and i want to share that more regularly
★ fests: i have a short list of the fests i want to participate in, and this year my goal is to finish them on time, and worry less about whether or not they hit a self-imposed word count, and more about if they’re quality writing
★ move everything to ao3: this is a more technical goal, but i want to move everything i’ve published to ao3 so it’s in an actual archive and can’t be lost to time on tumblr
★ one microfic a month: i cribbed this directly from crow, but it’s a good goal, and an achievable goal, and i’m considering it a personal challenge to keep myself from going months without writing entirely
★ stay on top of tag games: i am the actual worst at this but i love being tagged in things and i love seeing what people have to share. part of it is just remembering this is all for fun, and it doesn’t have to be perfect, so i can just do it, part of it is time management. either way, i want to be more active
Could you please tell us more about the amortentia mixup fic and also about the farmer's market florist AU? 💙
hello peony! ofc i can tell you more 💜
so they're both deeply only in the scrappy notes stage, but just revisiting them makes me excited to eventually get back to them. the florist au is predicated on the victorian language of flowers, which is something i've always wanted to learn about. the basic premise is that draco sells bouquets at the local farmer's market (maybe after turning the manor grounds into a floral farm i don't know) and harry keeps buying them because part of his new lease on life is buying himself flowers that make him happy. draco is using the flowers to send *very* romantic messages, confident that harry has no idea what draco's saying. harry's clueless. ron and hermione are not.
the amortentia mix up is just a little whacky concept that lets me play with some comedy and some teenage drama that's not about saving the world. slughorn was truly an instigator when he decided a bunch of 16 year olds needed access to a powerful love potion, and i cannot not think about the nightmare that caused for hogwarts. everyone knows too much about everyone else now. the weaselys all use the same shampoo (and so does harry sometimes) so who knows which one of them anyone is actually into. why does pansy's amortentia smell like both ron and hermione? how does millie know what cho's shampoo smells like anyway? no one is doing their homework and mcgonagall has given up on handing out detentions. it'll end up resolved eventually, right? i just want the chance to write teens yelling at one another over relationship drama. it makes me think of a disney channel original and it makes me laugh.
man geese giving me a hard one right off the bat. erm, i'm gonna treat the branches of the smithsonian like separate museums, because otherwise this list would be... very short.
1. National Museum of Natural History: i'm an americanist by training and don't get me wrong, i love my subject. but one of the things i love most about this museum is that i know so little about the stuff it houses. there's an alternate reality out there somewhere where i'm actually studying marine biology and working with jellyfish and learning about coelacanths, but it's not this one. i've also just spent a lot of time in this museum. i'm emotionally connected to it. i have to go visit the giant squid, and the coelacanth, and robert kennicott's skeleton. they're friends, and i love them, they've gotta be at the top of the list. (not to mention the creepy bird hall, which haunts my nightmares)
2. National Museum of American History: this was in a bit of a fight with the Hirshhorn for second place, and only won out because working there and getting to be in the space before people showed up, and for the ACCelerate Festival are two of my absolute most favorite memories. uh, what else can be said about this museum. sitting in the star spangled banner hall can make you feel very small, regardless of your (hopefully complicated) feelings about united states history. the statues in america on the move stare into your soul and look like ghosts and i am SURE they move when no one else is in the building, night at the museum style. they have muppets (what's not to love), and the ruby slippers, and an entire house! and as i've said before, i'm a united states historian by training, so i've got immense fondness for the place.
3. the Hirshhorn Museum of Modern Art: my beloved brutalist donut. my terrible horrible tiny escalatored, round menace. this museum is terrible, and wonderful, and i love it dearly. it's dizzying and confusing if you've never been (there is exhibit space in the basement, don't be fooled) and i've seen many, many things that have stuck with me in its galleries. a few favorites include pat steir's color wheel (2018-2019), ed atkins' safe conduct (2016), arthur jafa's love is the message the message is death (2016), reynier leyva novo's the weight of history, five nights (2014), janine antoni's lick and lather (1993) and literally so many more i couldn't name but could shriek excitedly about at you if i saw them again. it has instilled within me a love of modern art that i've known existed since i was very young (see next entry) but wouldn't have developed the same way without access to the hirhshhorn
4. The East Wing of the National Gallery of Art: the modern wing, the contemporary wing my beloved. where i first saw lavender mist by jackson pollock at a very bitty age and panicked everyone in the vicinity by running towards it. where the calders are kept. that gorgeous i m pei building full of light and glass and wonderful art and noise and the public! i am making myself beyond emotional just thinking about how long it has been since i've been in one of these spaces.
5. The Whaling Museum on Nantucket, MA: this is a bit of a cop out answer. i spent a summer working in the historic properties owned by the historical association, and i loved it, and i loved the museum. it's big open hall with a whale skeleton, it's rooftop deck perfect for eating lunch and looking out across the water, it's location partially inside an old candle factory with the actual press they used to harvest whale oil. it's a gorgeous space. that said, it's not necessarily a special museum by industry standards. it's a small local place (somewhere that happens to be very wealthy) and it shows. i'm fond of it for the time i spent there, but it probably wouldn't take much to knock it off this list.
it might surprise you there aren't bigger museums on this list. that's at least in part because i don't have a ton of experience with other museums (at least not as a visitor) that feels ridiculous to admit, as someone in the industry, but the pandemic (and the fact that my extended family in places where there are other museums, er, don't really like museums) have limited my experiences. im beyond lucky to be where i've been, and to be so involved in these places. this could easily be a list of my top 4 favorite jobs (+ plus the national gallery). idk.
send me an ask with "top five" anything, and i'll write you a very rambly answer!
(I might write anything from a paragraph to a whopping essay, but send me something you’ve noticed about my characterization or just something you want to know about my muse and I will write what I can!)
He sure as fuck needs one my dude.
Okay, all joking aside. He doesn’t like them. Cor doesn’t like anything where he feels vulnerable. Massages are a double whammy because not only do you have to be vulnerable around another person, you have to take off your clothes. (Well, you don’t have to, and he wouldn’t, but, massages are usually for your muscles, so, taking off your clothes helps the masseuse/masseur whatever word you have to use >:p) In my headcanon, both of these are a huge no to Cor.
Cor, in my HC, has a lot of scars all over his body, has had a lot of broken bones, and really doesn’t like how he looks. He has burn marks, electricity scars, frostbite wounds, gunshot wounds, knife wounds, explosion shrapnel. It’s not pretty. It’s not cool or interesting or strong in his eyes. It reminds him of the people he watched die in those scenarios. It’s really hard when the reminder is on your skin.
Also, if you try to massage his arms, or legs, and put both your hands on his arms or legs, and push down... You’re fucked. He will attack you. And he will hate himself for it. He will snap out of it in probably a few seconds, but in those second you pretty much better pray to six he won’t snap your neck because he will grab you and he will come close to doing just that. He absolutely hates this, and I know people make fun of the word now a days, but it triggers him. It straight up triggers his PTSD, and it will drive him to go into full on kill or be killed mode.
He can not relax. Not when he is put in a vulnerable position. No matter how many times he’s told it’s just a massage, it’s just a masseuse/masseur ect. He hates it. To branch off a bit, he keeps a knife in his bathroom even though he can warp a weapon to him at any time. That’s how worried about being vulnerable he is. He sleeps with his katana on him out of fear that the warping thing might not work at some point and he’ll be vulnerable in his sleep.
Now, as for Cor giving a massage, he can give a pretty mean one. Literally. It might hurt. But it feels good too. He knows the way around his own body, he need to stretch, and he shows he’s fast and flexible, so he must know at least basic stretches to keep his body in shape to do that. He can find the proper way to pop your neck bones, shoulder bones, back bones, elbow bones, it’ll feel weird but it’s strangely relieving to have them popped and to have your back be massaged by him, his hands are strong.
Although, actually having him massage you would be a rare chance, because, it would probably happen to a very close partner, or someone he feels very comfortable with. It’d probably be pre and post sex massages too lbr. So, good luck ever actually getting a massage from Cor.
thank you thank you to @corvuscrowned for the tag for this challenge, one line from every fic i posted (to ao3, i need to migrate an awful lot of stuff that’s still tumblr only) as a way to look back at my year in writing. seems like the best way to close out 2022
