             just  turn  your  head  and  act  casual  ;   act  like  you  belong   .    that  mantra  alone  had  gotten  him  out  of  more  than  one  troubling  occasion  and  with  a  light  sigh  -----  the  mercenary  would  lift  the  backpack  over  one  shoulder   ,    a  mundane  enough  gesture  for  a  boy  decorated  in  ink   .     “     the  train  sure  is  slow  tonight   .    ”     his  words  came  out  in  a  gruff  murmur   and  maybe  ----   just  maybe  -----  he  should  have  just  stayed  quiet   .

            it’s  not  uncommon  to  find  archer  awake  at  three  in  the  morning  stuffing  some  form  of  dry  hamburger  and  soggy  fries  into  his  mouth,  pajama-clad  and  legs  pulled  into  criss-cross  position.  the  only   strange   part  about  the  current  scene  is  that  someone’s  next  to  him,  even  the  company  of  his  closest  friends  barred  from  entering  the  tiny  apartment  he  lives  in  out  of  sheer  need  to  keep  the  fragments  of  his  life  in  their  respective  boxes   ———   exceptions  have   always   been  made  for  as  long  as  he’s  known  the  other,  though.       ❛  anyway,  as  i  was  saying,  it  was  kinda  sad.  i  broke  up  with  her  because  we  couldn’t  stop  fighting,  right  ?  and  she  just  sat  there   ———   she  was  getting  really  teary-eyed,  too,  but  i  think  that’s  already  moved  onto  anger  ‘cause  i  got   several   threatening  texts  from  her  older  brother  about  how  i  should  start  sleeping  with  one  eye  open.  ❜       he’ll  pause  to  glance  at  his  counterpart,  previous  bite  of  his  food  chipmunked  into  his  cheek.       ❛  why  are  you  looking  at  me  like  that  ?  ❜        the  back  of  his  hand  wipes  insecurely  at  the  corners  of  his  mouth,  the  line  of  his  chin.       ❛  do  i  have  something  on  my  face  ?  ❜

        ❝  sorry  i  had  to  cancel  our  reservations  .  i’ve  never had  to  fill  in  on  short  notice  like  this  before  but  i’m  the  newest  here  ,  so  .  .  .  ❞    the  boy  mumbles  his  words  as  he  lets  the  chunky  headset  fall  around  his  neck  ,  stretching  back  in  the  chair  .  he’s  never  been  one  to  date  ---  mostly  out  of  nerves  that  he  won’t  be  exciting  enough  or  outgoing  enough  for  the  other  ---  and  somehow  they’ve  ended  up  at  the  radio  station  he  works  at  (  which  feels  like  the  most  uninteresting  place  outside  of  realtor  offices  and  the  dmv  )  instead  of  the  michelin  -  star  restaurant  he  planned  .  god  knows  why  they  agreed  to  come  with  .    ❝  do  you  wanna  ,  uh  ,  say  something  on-air  ?  you  can  introduce  the  next  song  .  ---  i  promise  ,  just  one  more  hour  and  we  can  go  do  something  fun  .  ❞

        ❝  okay  ,  don’t  be  obvious  ,  the  girls  in  sweaters  to  your  right  are  my  friends  spying  on  us   ---   i  think  they  might  be  insane  .  they’re  literally  staring  at  you  .  ❞    she  nudges  in  the  direction  of  the  girls  at  the  diner  booth  ,  the  ones  peering  over  at  the  pair  over  a  big  menu  like  a  bad  sitcom  moment  .  when  mina  asked  for  a  little  backup  in  case  her  date  turned  out  to  be  a  kidnapper  or  murderer  ,  she  was  thinking  of  sharing  her  phone  location  and  some  ‘  i’m okay  ’  texts  ,  not  this  .  her  face  feels  hot  from  embarrassment  ,  shoving  her  head  in  her  hands  as  she  breaks  out  into  a  fit  of  uncomfortable  laughter  .    ❝  i  knew  we  should’ve  gone  to  the  movies  .  ❞

            “ i don’t get why just because i slept with your friend or whatever, we can’t even TALK. what’s the harm in a bit of conversation ? ” confusion underlies his tone, unable to piece together how his relations with rei’s friend had equated to such a hostile dynamic between the two of them. albeit, he always did tend to venture towards the more o b l i v i o u s side when it came to situations like these.
