Before you swipe left, can you notice the difference between the poses on the left and the ones on the right? Hint: they’re very subtle, but very powerful (and also the header of the tutorial kinda gives it away 😂) . I always get asked to post some core work. The thing is, I don’t do “core drills”, but I try to incorporate core awareness into everything. And to me, that makes a huge difference. . Core awareness (aka bandhas) should happen in every single pose - even “simple” ones like the ones in the picture. And what is core awareness in this context? It’s not so much about sucking the belly in. But it’s about creating a lift that starts from the base of the pelvic floor, all the way up to the crown of the head (and beyond). . A couple tricks that has helped me maintain awareness of this throughout every pose: . 1️⃣ Feel the weight distribution of the body This is easier to start with standing poses like the ones shown here. Start by noticing where weight gets distributed on the feet. Generally, if the weight is forward towards the toes, we would have our ribs and tailbone sticking out - which is an indication of lack in core awareness. And if the weight is back to the heels, we’re generally hunching a little - which is again an indication of lack in core awareness. . 2️⃣ Feel energy flows When we start to notice weight distribution, we can also start noticing energy flow. In every pose, energy should be balanced. Gravity naturally would pull us down, and so the energy we’re trying to maintain is that uplifting energy (i.e. mula & uddiyana bandha). . Usually in a forward fold, we allow all the energy to sink down. But we actually want to keep maintaining the lift in the pelvic floor as we fold forward. So much so that there is a little scooping effect in the lower belly. . And this lifting sensation should be applied in every pose in yoga. If you maintain this core awareness throughout your practice, you don’t need to worry about core drills. Like I say in class, every pose in yoga is a core pose! 😊 . IGTV tutorial on this will be up in a few days.
