MAX KISMAN - TYPECON 2004 ANNOUNCEMENT POSTCARD
(MONDAY 20TH APRIL 2020)
I think this is an interesting communication, because it relies on the colour and proximity between shapes to create meaning. I think that is clever because it relies off my understanding of what letter forms look like, even if the presentation of each letter is slightly more abstract.
I don’t necessarily know how effective this piece is however, because, as an audience with no prior knowledge of this event, I struggled to understand the final word - High. Not only could I not initially decipher it, but its relation to the left word - type - means nothing to me. What is Type High? Yes, I am not the target market of this product, and yes, it probably has a meaning within the context, but at a first glance, I was confused. I think it is because of the colour palette. I like it, but it lost consistency on the second row. The ‘Type’ and ‘Con’ and 2004, are largely the same colour, however, is very chaotic in the lower rung. For me, the ‘type’ on the second row was more understandable, however, I just couldn’t see it immediately in the second word.
I fell into a rabbit hole on Designspiration, scouring through pages of typography. I found a digital model of type, to which I followed the artist (Corey Holms), or who I thought was the artist, to his Flickr account, and poured through his collections as well. I found this postcard by Kisman listed under the TypeCon Archive on his page.
