Hey! You are majoring in linguistics, right? I was wondering if you could give me some advice on choosing a college/university that has a great program. I just don't know were to go ?????

Well, I'd say definitely stay in-state if you can. Unless you get a full ride, out of state tuition is killer. Look at rankings for your program. Many times people change majors too, so look at the rest of the school's rankings as well, (their sciences, engineering, etc). Visit your choices, talk to other students who are already there. It's really complex but you'll just KNOW when a school is right for you.

Also: don't go into debt for nothing. Job market SUCKS right now. If I'd have known how awful it is four years ago, I probably would have just gotten some average community college degree and not bothered. If you've going to go to school, literally do anything in your power to make connections, work at it, etc. You need to in order to get any kind of job after you graduate.

Novel Excerpt

From the end of chapter four of my current major novel project, working title: Tel'Imaya.

“Eron,” she said. “Sorry- Prince Eron. Your highness. I'm exhausted. Do we have to stay all night?”

He looked at her, and then around at the lords and ladies, some of whom Miri had met, and some of whom were strangers, looking at her with curiosity. Then he looked back at her, and shook his head. “I'll take you back to your room,” he told her quietly, and began to lead her out of the crowd. She almost stumbled over her feet a few times, the tiredness taking over her more rapidly now that she had noticed it, but Eron wrapped a careful arm around her shoulders and pressed onwards.

They were waylaid just before they escaped the room by a concerned-looking Brynden. “Is the little lady alright?” he asked, and Eron nodded.

“Just tired,” he said, his tone gentle. “I'm going to escort her back to her room, and make sure she doesn't just fall asleep on her feet- or in an armchair.”

Brynden nodded. “I'll make sure your father knows, then, and the others.”

“Thank you.”

“Any time!” Brynden called, and waved at them as he disappeared back into the crowd.

Eron managed to get Miri out of the room without any more trouble after that, and soon enough he was leading her through the halls back towards her room. She was completely turned around, of course, and he might have been leading her just about anywhere, but she would have been just as lost with or without him. And then they were walking down a more familiar hall, and stopping in front of a door with a green tie on its handle. Miri sighed as they made their way inside, and left Eron's side to grab her sleeping clothes and go into the bathroom to change.

“What should I do with my dress?” she asked him when she made her way out of the bathroom.

“Give it to me,” he said, and took it when she offered it and hung the garment on the hanger Tally had left, and then hung that on a hook on the back of the bedroom door. “There.”

“Why didn't you tell me you were a prince?” Miri asked, stopping Eron as he made his way out of her bedroom. She sat on the bed and watched as he turned back around to face her, standing in the doorway.

His face was shadowed in the dim darkness of the room, only the moonlight streaming through the window illuminating his features, but his hesitation was obvious. Then he seemed to gather his courage, and said, “I didn't want you to think less of me.”

“Less?” Miri scoffed, and he ducked his head, looking like a bashful boy with his hands tucked behind him and his dark hair just a little disarrayed.

“Not less, I suppose,” he said. “But... different. You would have treated me like a prince, when before you just treated me like- like me.”

Miri stared at him. “Eron. Eron, by the Goddess.”

“I admire you,” he said, sounding like he was admitting some great secret. “I like you a great deal, Miri, and I couldn't have stood to see you pull away from me. But Aedan is right when he calls me foolish- I have no right to call you friend, not when I deceived you.”

There was nothing she could say to that, not right away, and she looked down at her lap. “Eron,” she started, but she was cut off by the sound of footsteps. He walked over the the bed and knelt before her, taking her hands in his.

“Forgive me,” he said. “I would never ask your friendship, not if you do not offer it. But please, please forgive me.”

“You're a fool,” she whispered, and withdrew her hands. His face fell, and she couldn't help but reach out and lay a hand on his shoulder, meeting his eyes. “And I'm tired. We- we'll talk about this later, okay? I need to think.”

A spark of hope lit behind his eyes again, and he took her other hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. She swallowed, and looked away as he rose.

“Sweet dreams, Miri,” he said into the quiet room, and then he slipped out of her bedroom, closing its door behind him with a soft click. An echoing click followed as he stepped out of her quarters entirely, and she was left with nothing but tangled thoughts and the sound of her own breathing.
