Amanda Serrano fights to a draw in her MMA debut

Amanda Serrano(0-0-1) was the co-main event for Combate Americas, Combate Estrellas this past Friday the 13th and fought to a draw against Corina Herrera (3-4-1). Serrano prepared well for her first foray into the new territory of mixed martial arts and while she did not get the finish she had hoped for, she did not lose either. Serrano posted a lot of training footage on her social media account to give fans a look at her preparation and while most of it paid off, the actual fight like many fights brought a higher degree of difficulty during fight night.

The first round went as expected when Herrera tried to engage Serrano standing. She was out-struck at almost every exchange and while the days of style versus style have been long gone and being well rounded is the name of the game, Herrera tried to test Serrano’s boxing pedigree. It was a test she would fail as Serrano clearly dominated that round with her onslaught of strikes and counter strikes. Herrera had enough of that and changed her strategy for the remainder of the fight.

Round two had Herrera go for takedowns to force Serrano to be where Herrera felt she had more experience to grind out a victory over the five-division world boxing champion. To Serrano’s credit, a lot of takedowns were stuffed and she would defend off the cage well, forcing Herrera to attempt a guillotine submission which Serrano would defend, but may have taken a toll on her that would carry into the final round.

The third and final round would have Herrera not only be successful in her takedowns but she would spend a lot of time in the mount position. Only she and Serrano can tell you if the strikes she threw from the top position had any effect but from the looks of it both fighters were noticeably gassed due to the output that took them through the final round. It should be noted Herrera was not Serrano’s original opponent; Herrera took the fight on a little less than weeks’ notice and did well for someone coming in within that amount of time. Whether it was the sort notice change, the pressure of debuting in a new sport for one and coming in against high profile opponent for the other the exhaustion was evident at the close of the fight that judges deemed a draw.

The position of Herrera’ mount was pretty high and at one point seemed set for what looked like a mounted triangle. The pressure could have been a slow choke working in which Serrano fought through to the end of the round, which could be why she stumbled when the round was over.  It was cause for concern, but she has kept fans assured she is fine and anxious to get back to training. A draw is better than a loss and if she returns to MMA she can only get better given her drive to compete. It was a good first outing for the Brooklyn fighter and fans should look forward to what she does next in combat sports.

Amanda Serrano fought to a draw

Took the first two rounds with superior boxing skills but got taken down in the 3rd and exposed to GNP and a bunch of submission attempts. Weathered the storm but ending up dropping it 10-8. Judges had it 28-28 across the board. Not a bad debut considering her opponent Corina Herrera is pretty experience with 7 pro fights to her name (3-4).
