Sumya Anani vs Fredia Gibbs 1 - Nov 16, 2001
Women's history month continues with another big clash from the year 2001!
Sumya Anani is a legend of the sport of women's boxing, coming out of Minnesota. Anani is a former weightlifter who took up boxing on the side, going professional to earn some extra money. And once she started, she just kept winning. She started her career an impressive 18-1, avenging her only loss as well as beating the like of Christy Martin. She was the WIBA super lightweight champion at the time heading into this fight with "The Most Dangerous Woman in the World".
Fredia Gibbs is a former kickboxer who turned to boxing. Originally a student at Benny Urquidez's school, Gibbs took up Muay Thai and started taking pro kickboxing bouts. She was a KO machine in kickboxing and muay thai, winning the ISKA World Super Lightweight. In 1997, Gibbs took up boxing. She took to it well, going 8-1 in her first 9 fights and lining up a big fight with Sunya Anani.
What resulted was one of the best women's fights of 2001.

Kristian Prenga (20-1, 20 KOs) is from my neck of the woods. Fighting out of a gym in Lyndhurst, NJ and has made a name for himself fighting locally for the past decade. He's originally from Albania, so if you've been to any of the Albanian restaurants/neighborhoods/cafes around North NJ, you've likely seen his face on posters advertising fights in Newark or Atlantic City. He's been lined up as possibly the last stop on Anthony Joshua's recent comeback tour en route to a possible fight with Tyson Fury.
Prenga will get a chance to shock basically everyone when he faces Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) this Saturday (July 25).

Obviously Tsarukyan and Merab (and Volk) are the actual best wrestlers that a Team Khabib fighter has faced in MMA (Islam and Umar), but is Archie Colgan (Usman's next opponent) the most credentialed amateur wrestler any of them has faced since Al Iaquinta?
Was in and out the house for UFC OKC so only really watched a couple of the fights. Also only saw the PFL main event between Eblen and Kasanganay. The main two fights I really cared about this weekend were Jose Delgado vs Austin Bashi and Fatima Kline vs Tabatha Ricci.
Kline is the best young prospect (26) in the strawweight division. For whatever reason, the division has kind of inundated with prospects and contenders with serious wholes in their games. Either women like Marina Rodriguez that can't stop a takedown for anything or lots of women who are basically just Carla Esparza without the wrestling depth or transitional striking to make it work. One of the latter of which is Ricci herself. At 5'1, it was always going to be an uphill battle to face longer opponents with any type of range tools. She's made it work in the UFC with her athleticism, quickness, and actual top control game but Kline is as well rounded a fighter as you're going to see at 115lbs today. Struggled a bit with Ricci's reluctance to be in range and commit early but really got to open up a bit when they started having wrestling exchanges. By the 3rd round, Kline was suplexing the woman and landing with rear hands when Ricci would try to duck into range. I do wonder if Kline's well roundedness will come back to bite her long term as she moves up to fight women like Dern, Robertson, or other specialists. It feels like she's willing to have whatever type of fight the opponent will give her rather than force them into a specific type of fight she actually wants
Jose Delgado vs Austin Bashi was dope. My most anticipated fight of the night. And I think Delgado kind of has similar problems to Kline in that he'll fight his opponent's type of fight. Lucky for him, despite Bashi being nothing but a wall of meat he's still only 5'6. While he is quick, his brand of striking relies a lot on his explosiveness and 50/50 exchanges to get into the pocket to shoot. Led to him getting dropped a couple times over 3 rounds. This is despite Bashi repeatedly finding ways to get to Delgado's body for TD attempts. Bashi just could not get him down and keep him there. Delgado would either drag him up the body or break Delgado's grip and get underhooks to turn Bashi to the fence. Delgado seemed to take this as a challenge though and instead of pushing his reach advantage, he decided to try to wrestle with Bashi down the back half of the fight.

Dricus basically beat up Usman for like 4.5 rounds, shoots for a takedown as he starts to gas, gets stuffed and allows a 39 year old Usman with no knees to walk him down for the last 2 minutes of the fight. Amazing stuff.

Tommy McMillen stops Alberto Montes in the 3rd round
A fun sloppy affair. McMillen is pure aggression, stringing together long combos and pushing Montes back to the cage repeatedly. Even got knocked down twice trying to push Montes back. But Montes could not capitalize. Got caught up in McMillen's pace and just tried to rest when he did get time instead of take initiative and try to force McMillen back. Even though I suspect McMillen is terrible fighting backwards. Instead, McMillen wore him down before finishing him along the fence.
Not a believer in his long term prospects as a contender but McMillen will make some money as an action fighter as long as he's able to keep getting up when he does get dropped cause there's gonna be a lot of that in his future. Lots of reaching punches. Would be interested in seeing him against someone with a range game. What does he do when he can't just press.
