One thing that bothers me with the way the taint on saidin is visualized in the series, is that we’re absolutely going to notice when someone isn’t affected by it. Like, in a place full of male channelers who are all Super Depressed because they’re all going to go mad, I can’t help but wonder how they’re going to hide characters like Taim and Dashiva, who get to use the Dark One’s condom
“Nobody stands nose-to-nose with the Dragon Reborn,” Rand growled. “The Forsaken could tell him that, whoever he is. Right, Flinn? Dashiva?” Flinn nodded uncertainly. Dashiva flinched. “You think I can’t surprise him, Bashere? Watch!” Pulling the long bundle loose, he stripped away the cloth covering, and Rand heard gasps as raindrops glistened on a sword seemingly made of crystal. The Sword That Is Not a Sword. “Let’s see if he’s surprised by Callandor in the hands of the Dragon Reborn, Bashere.”
Rand thrust his hands high and channeled. “I am the Dragon Reborn!” The words boomed across the square, amplified by Air and Fire, and flames shot up from his hands a hundred feet. Behind him, the Asha’man filled the sky with balls of fire streaking in every direction. All save Dashiva, who made blue lightnings crackle in a jagged web above the square.
Is Dashiva trying to warn Sammael, or just boasting?
Umm, hiding this under a read-more because I know at least one of my followers hasn't read beyond The Path of Daggers yet and I'll be discussing later content.
So we know Demandred recruited Taim to the Shadow. But what we don't know is when, exactly. I've been tentatively thinking somewhere between Dumai's Wells and the attack on the Sun Palace (in TPoD), but there's something confusing about this;
“Kill him,” the M’Hael had ordered before sending them to Cairhien, but he had been as displeased that they were found out as that they had failed. Far Madding was to be their last chance; he had made that as plain as polished brass. Dashiva had simply vanished. Kisman did not know whether he had run or the M’Hael had killed him, and he did not care.
“Kill him,” Demandred had commanded later, but he had added that it would be better they died than let themselves be discovered again. By anyone, even the M’Hael, as if he did not know of Taim’s order.
-Winter's Heart, ch. 22
Why would Demandred be ordering Asha'man around behind Taim's back? Of course he isn't accountable to Taim, certainly not, but still this whole thing just seems a bit... off.
It has been speculated that it wasn't actually Taim who ordered the attack on the Sun Palace, but Dashiva (eh, I mean Osan'gar) disguised as Taim. That would explain the lack of communication between Taim and Demandred. But that's the only thing it would explain.
If Taim was already working for Demandred, a) surely he wouldn't have given such an order without Demandred's knowledge? and b) why would Demandred have bothered working with the Asha'man directly instead of having Taim arrange the whole thing?
If Taim wasn't yet working for Demandred... Well, then I would like to claim that it wasn't Taim who gave the order. Even though Dashiva (I'll just keep calling him that) doesn't make a huge lot of sense, a not-yet-Darkfriend Taim makes even less.
Would Dashiva have had the chance to impersonate Taim & send the Fabulous Four after Rand? That's the only problem here. Because I'm thinking not likely.
Or, well, it depends on whether he would have had the chance to Travel to the Black Tower without attracting attention. Because we know he was with Rand in Cairhien at some point after the battle against the Seanchan and before the attack, when Rand tried to intimidate Cadsuane. But the day of the attack, there's no mention of any other Asha'man being with Rand than Fedwin Morr.
So technically he could have, but...
But it sounds like a really long shot and I'm not convinced. But the whole thing just doesn't seem to make too much sense either way.
