Earning Trust From Customers
By Wonder Expert Researcher Julie L.
The methods for gaining brand trust in customers appear to be consistent across many industries worldwide. Prior to the first engagement with the brand in the pre-purchase phase, the most important factors are corporate image, perceived service quality, trust, and customer switching costs. Questions to consider: is the website professionally made? How easy is it to purchase products and navigate the website? How much helpful, usable information is on the website? Is there too much wordy fluff there? Can I opt out if I'm not satisfied? You want to present very minimal risk at this stage.
After the initial encounter, brand loyalty is dependent on consistent positive encounters, which will increase customer satisfaction, trust, relationship commitment, and continuity.
To deepen trust, storytelling can be introduced, moving past the marketplace and into the realm of emotional connection. In "Narrative Processing: Building Consumer Connections to Brands," (2004) written by Jennifer Edson Escalas, she states, "narrative processing creates or enhances self-brand connections because people generally interpret the meaning of their experiences by fitting them into a story. Narrative processing may create a link between a brand and the self when consumers attempt to map incoming narrative information onto stories in memory. A brand becomes more meaningful the more closely it is linked to the self."
