Did you see the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes series? If so, what did you think of it? And what do you think of the new series by comparison (or in isolation if you haven't seen t he original)?
Watched it, loved it. The fact that you get to see the minutiae of state-building and warfare really sold me -- the pew-pew was exciting to watch, but it wasn’t always the most important thing happening. (It’s the same reason I really enjoyed Fang of the Sun Dougram even though it’s too long and most of the fights are recycley.)
It’s been years since I watched it so my memories are somewhat hazy on the particulars of the adaptation, but since I’m reading the Viz novels right now, I have a good reference for the current adaptation and I’m not really seeing much that’s different. Pretty straightforward adaptation, which I like.
Sure, there was the uproar about the character designs and we all enjoyed the Reinhard no Basket jokes, but like... whatever? MAYBE I miss gruff Schonkopf when compared to his new bishie self, but I also don’t want the team to feel like they’re hamstrung by how the previous OVA looked. I’ve already got Yang and Reinhard backstory’d and kicking their first asses, so I’m pumped.
