has anyone else noticed a sharp uptick in people straight up using the wrong word in common turns of phrase in the last few years? just in the past hour ive heard "courteous of" (vs. "courtesy of") and saying that an action would be "to [a company's] disregard" (vs. "discredit" or "disadvantage"), and i feel like i hear native speakers making this kind of mistake all the time these days, esp people in their mid-twenties or younger

like yeah prescriptivism is cringe and i dont wanna be all "dumb kids these days", but like. seems kinda bad that people aren't recognizing that what they're saying is blatantly nonsensical? especially in light of recent reporting about declining literacy rates

#rambles #ive also recently encountered a fair few people who seem to struggle with reading unfamiliar words as written/sounding stuff out #i did recently learn about how a lot of people have been taught to read primarily through the lens of 'three cueing'#which seems like a fucking INSANE way to teach kids to read #and i would think that difficulty with entirely new words would be a very obvious consequence of that #i guess i just kinda assumed everyone did hooked on phonics (or something equivalent) at some point?#finding out that that's not the case has been eye-opening and despair-inducing #bc like. man. if the only way i knew how to process written text was basically glorified guessing i would be *terrified* in so many context #what if i had to ask a pharmacy about a medication that ive only seen written and have never heard spoken?#and good fucking luck pronouncing uncommon names correctly #i mean even just getting called on in class to read aloud would be made 100x worse #anyway. things seem kinda dire yall

I appreciate the sentiment but I don't get all those "we made it to the longest night of the year! the light will start returning soon! it's all uphill from here & we're halfway there!" posts because like. Oct-Dec is the easier half of Winter. Jan-Apr is way harder. there's no big holidays or decorations, everyone is kind of over the whole Cozy Hygge Sweaters & Cocoa vibe so they're just tired & restless instead, and the whole thing is so drawn out & uneventful that it feels like it lasts 10x longer
