Monel Mesh- Ideal material for Boiler feed water heaters
Monel 400 is an alloy of nickel and copper which is a solid-solution alloy and it can be hardened only by cold working. It has high strength and toughness over a wide range of temperatures. This alloy has high resistance to numerous corrosive environments. Monel 400 is typically used in applications including pump & propeller shafts, electrical & electronic components, deaerating heaters, crude petroleum stills. It is commonly used in marine & chemical processing fields.
Monel 400 is a versatile corrosion resistant material which exhibits resistance to corrosion in numerous reducing environments and withstands contact with hydrofluoric acid, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride or their derivatives. This alloy has exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations up to the boiling point. It exhibits high resistance to neutral and alkaline salts and has been preferred as a material of construction for salt plants. It is widely used in shipbuilding applications, marine applications and seawater desalination plants. This alloy has very low rates of corrosion in flowing sea or brackish water. It has resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting in most fresh and industrial water applications.
Monel wire mesh is composed of nickel (67%) and copper (23%) alloy wire which makes it resistant to sea water and steam at high temperatures. Monel wire mesh is strong against deaerated acids such as H2SO4 and HCl. The Monel wire mesh is adversely affected by nitric acid and ammonia solutions due to high percentage of copper content. It has excellent weldability and high stress corrosion resistance. It has high tensile strength and high yield strength and has excellent mechanical properties at subzero temperature. Monel wire mesh has low strength in annealed condition however usage of foreign elements and heat treatment assists in increasing the strength. Applications of Monel wire mesh include

Monel 404 has high strength and toughness and has high resistance to numerous corrosive environments. It has low permeability and excellent brazing characteristics. Monel 400 is used in the form of different types of wires such as fine wire, plated wire and bare wire in various applications including

· Marine fixtures
· Boiler feed water heaters and other heat exchanger components

The corrosion resistance of bi-metal weld joints of Monel 400 tube to Stainless steel 316 tube by GTAW process was studied. The study was done to contribute to the ongoing research work on the use of Monel 400 and 316L austenitic Stainless steel in industrial environments. The corrosion behavior of Monel 400 and 316L austenitic Stainless steel welded joints was investigated using the potentiodynamic method. The base metal, heat affected zone and weld zone after post weld heat treatment were analyzed. Results were correlated using optical microscopy. The heat affected zone of Monel 400 had the lowest corrosion resistance whereas 316L Stainless steel base metal had the highest corrosion resistance.
