It’s true I just recently discovered this version of #cortezthekiller @davematthewsband and @thewarrenhaynes and it’s pure magic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiO13jTsBdQ https://www.instagram.com/p/B1l1IXaF1AD/?igshid=1rqcjynl4xd7n

No.5, “Albums (or Bands) That Make You Want To Start A Band... Or Me, Anyway.” Sweet&ferocious, jaggedy&smooth, pretty&garage-rocky... or whatever. His voice! So thin and screechy, but then pretty when he’s joined by background singers and/or Crosby/Stills/Nash. I usually choose some #sundaynightjazz but I’m feeling rawer than that right now, and who’s to say that #cortezthekiller isn’t a jazz song with rock instruments. Neil Young makes me want to sit with my friends who play guitar well (or maybe not “well,” technically, even, just willing to crank it up and try stuff) and let them take long solos while I play backing chords. #vinyl #vinylcollection #neilyoung #neilyoungandcrazyhorse #zuma #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl #treadmillsoundtrack #ellipticalsoundtrack (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnh8J_kBuEU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7rdcmdie3w5u
One of the most memorable songs from one of my favorite concerts of all time...that fucking guitar, yo
Marissa Nadler August 1, 2016 at Valley Bar, Phoenix AZ [Touring for the album]
Concert Memories: Oddly, while waiting for the show to start over the PA, “Janie in Love“ played which prompted my friend and I to wonder who gets to choose the music played inbetween sets but that that was the strangest thing to hear... a possible song that could be played by the main act since it’s their lead single of the latest album. Definitely a first... and an omen because Marissa did not have plans to play the song, which I was looking forward to.
My friends and I really enjoyed the touring opener, Wrekmeister Harmonies. They at times sounded Cocteau Twins and David Bowie and Johnny Cash-esque in a good way.
When Marissa got on stage she kept saying she’s never played phoenix before and though my friend and I tried to say yes she has, we let it go, because her last time here had an awkwardly sad moment, which you can review my November 1, 2009 setlist memory.
This was my first time seeing Marissa with a full band... and it definitely added to the performance... I was unfamiliar with many of the songs, and trying to get into the latest albums concept at the concert, since I hadn’t had a chance to familiarize myself with it pre-show. Marissa has a strong music aesthetic so the songs felt familiar thought they were new. People in the crowd would throw out the songs they wanted to hear every now and again (”The Sun Always Reminds Me of You”) and so she talked about how having so many albums, you want to spend time performing the new ones as the old ones are just that, old and sometimes you don't want to play them anymore... but she said she’d try at the end of the show promising a solo set. Marissa did seem very excited about a cover song... because with a backing band it was going to be amazing and told us to anticipate it. Of the main set, I connected with “Hungry is the Ghost,” “All the Colors of the Dark” and “Dead City Emily.”
So that cover... once they started playing my eyes widened with realization and delight... they were playing it... IT! “CORTEZ THE KILLER!” And as Marissa said it would be, it was AMAZING! Never did I think I would get to hear THAT cover and then I did! Sometimes concert wishes unspoken do come true!
Note: Interestingly, on the back of the setlist, I found a note of the guest list for the Austin show.
