“Would you just look at him… he’s beautiful.” Wilma’s voice was quiet as she held a bundle in her arms, staring at the little face inside. It was still dark outside, but the slow creep of pinkish-yellow light was forming just above the horizon. The settlement doctor and her assistant flitted around the room, gathering supplies and bloodied laundry to be cleaned and sanitized. Codsworth stopped helping them to float over to Wilma in bed.
“Oh mum, he’s the picture of perfection! Congratulations are in order, you both did wonderfully.” Codsworth’s joy was evident–his voice module warbled a bit as if he were going to cry. “Shall I call the master in? He’s been pacing and worried sick. Truthfully, I don’t think he’s slept a wink all night.”
Wilma smiled and nodded for her husband to be sent in. That made sense, Red did the same when Shaun was born.
Preston made his way into the house shortly after Codsworth disappeared to go get him. His hat was off, holding it to his chest as he walked into the dimly lit bedroom. Wilma waved at him weakly and he held back a little sound when he saw the bundle in her arms. He was excited and emotional, but he made sure to check on her first. He kneeled to her side and planted a kiss on her forehead “Hey–how are you feeling?”
“Mm. Just had a baby. High on med-x.” She sighed. “Which is a rare thing, huh? Call John in here, I'm sure he’d love to get a party going.”
“Funny, babe.” He smirked at her, before looking at the little brown face in her arms. “Is that…?”
“Yes. Congratulations, Garv... it’s a boy. Here… you can hold him.” The bundle started to coo and whine as Wilma handed him off to his father. “Oh don’t fuss now, sweetheart. This is your daddy, so you oughta get used to him.”
“Wow.” Preston choked out, looking at his son as he held him in his arms. “Wil, I… I still can’t believe this… our son... our son.” The sun was rising, painting the family in an orange glow through the window. There were tears forming in his eyes, lower lip wibbling as the baby blinked at him.
He looked at Wilma who was wiping her own eyes, watching the emotional scene. “I think he looks a lot like you!” She sniffled. “We should call him Junior.”
He chuckled modestly. With the baby’s cloudy eye color mirroring Wilma’s light eyes and the obvious dimples he got from her, he wasn’t so sure they were exactly twins now. But maybe they would be as he got older.
“Actually, I was thinking… maybe we could call him Leon?” He proposed and Wilma’s eyebrows raised. “I didn’t get to meet your brother… but I know you really miss him.” He sniffled again and covered his face briefly so he could clear his throat. He met her weepy gaze again and nodded. “He always sounded like such a good man… might be a good way to honor him.”
“Oh Preston… how did I ever get so lucky to find a man like you.” Wilma cried and Preston got up to inch into bed next to her, still supporting their son in his arms. Wilma kissed his cheek. “Yes, I think Leon is just perfect.”
