LP Review - ‘Expansions’ by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes ( 1975 )
Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes – ‘Expansions’ Flying Dutchman – BDL1-0934 Vinyl, LP, Album, Gatefold US 1975
Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue 'is the number one selling vinyl of all time. Getz/Gilberto featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim on Verve records is another brilliant, jazz standard album. This release features classic Brazilian jazz / Bossa Nova. (I have both of these LPs in my collection.)
If you want some really cool, hip sounding, R&B / Soul Jazz check out Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes. Lonnie Liston Smith was born on the 28th of December, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia. He started his music career working with the house band at the Royal Theater, Baltimore. He later moved up to New York City where he cut his teeth with jazz greats like Art Blakey and Miles Davis. It was in New York where Liston Smith moved from acoustic jazz to fusion. Then in 1973, he formed his own group - Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes.
Liston Smith's 1975 Flying Dutchman release "Expansions" is one of my favorite Soul Jazz, Jazz Fusion albums of my entire record collection. As a matter of fact, I would recommend this beautiful album to anyone without hesitation.
A1 - Expansions - Very contemporary funky sounding jazz fusion. Nice singing here as well. A standout title track. Nice jazz flute work here.
A2 - Desert nights -This instrumental jazz number works very well. A sophisticated Melody and a very tasty track. Probably my favorite jazz tune on the entire album.
A3- Summer Days - It's funny upon first hearing the song I said it reminds me of a Mexican jazz brunch. To this very day and still reminds me of the same thing. Fun bubbly cheerful laid-back, Sunday morning music.
B1 - Voodoo Woman- Voodoo Woman is a very nice jazz fusion/ funk piece. Side B is off to a great start with this instrumental number.
B2- Piece -A nice soulful jazz vocal singing on this track. More of a traditional jazz vocal number.
B3- Shadows -A very nice modern sounding, hip, jazz fusion track. I like it!
B4- My Love – A beautiful, soulful, traditional R&B song - sung over a jazzy backdrop
