Jupiter Like You’ve Never Seen It
This stunning wide-field view of Jupiter was captured by the James Webb Space Telescope using its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and it’s absolutely packed with detail.
You can spot vivid auroras glowing near the planet’s north and south poles, faint rings stretching around the giant, and even two tiny moons Amalthea (the brighter one) and Adrastea, barely visible at the edge of the rings. Notice the diffraction spikes radiating from the auroras and countless small dots in the background those are likely distant galaxies!
Since the human eye can’t see infrared light, this image is color-mapped using visible colors. It blends data from two filters: F212N (shown in orange) and F335M (shown in cyan) to give us this breathtaking view.
