Later that evening, after the stage had cleared and the bar’s energy had mellowed into low murmurs and clinking glasses, Sienna slid into the booth near the back, away from the band’s echoing feedback and the tangle of tourists at the bar. She’d already ordered two beers, a plate of seasoned peanuts, and a basket of lumpiang shanghai—extra crispy, the way Rafael would have liked.
When the lawyer finally arrived - looking too professional in this heat and venue – legal pad tucked under one arm, Sienna greeted him with a grin that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Uy, eto o! Free food, free beer. Not every day you get to relax after playing attorney to half of this town.”
Was this a bribe? Maybe? It was still nice to catch up though. They’d known each other for years and out of everyone she knew, Rafael was probably the most reliable person she could stomach being around tonight.
If only she could just jump straight into what she actually needed from him. But that wouldn’t be Sienna. She would have preferred talking more, getting updates about people they both knew, gaining gossip in legal-speak or whatever it was that floats Rafael’s boat. But the whole time, she knew she will have to speak up what has been sitting heavy on her chest for days.
