Hello hello, I wondered if you knew how to make the papa V cornet mitre the one with the skeletal cassock, or know of any tutorials for that shape at all? Yout recent piece looked amazing 👏
I haven't made one myself (yet), I started making it but I decided to focus on doing the black robes instead so I ended up using the embroidery I'd done for it on the back of my Papa V capelet. And I haven't come across any tutorials but here's my ramblings if it helps 😅
The best look at it we've had are the photographs Piers Atkinson (the designer / maker) posted to his Instagram last year:
And if you look at Papa wearing it you can see it's got side pieces that fit behind the masks cheekbones to help it stay on his head (though even then it was prone to falling off and they had to add an additional strap to it for the US leg of the tour).
So focusing on the mitre part for a second:
Assuming you're using something like EVA foam as the base (I'd recommend about 7mm thickness as less than that doesn't hold it's shape very well and thicker foam is a nightmare to stitch through when you're attaching the fabric) the basic mitre shape would be something like this (left front piece, right back piece):
(Excuse my crude sketches I'm away from home at the moment so don't have access to the mitre pattern I made.)
Though, Because they had to add that additional strap later in the tour, if I were to make it I'd modify it so it's got more support at the back. So I'd probably do something like this for the base EVA foam:
I'd recommend making a paper pattern first to make sure it fits, and make sure you have the mask you're gonna use with it to hand when patterning it as you'll need to make sure the mask fits over it and the side burns sit behind the cheek bones.
I'd also add some cross shaped ribbons on the inside to help keep the mitre in shape (as you can't collapse this one)! and stop it from sliding too far down your head
This is the inside of my V mitre to try and show what I mean :)
With the cornette part that's a bit harder...
The most common way I've seen people do it is using a wire base attached at the back of the mitre with translucent fabric draped over it and stitched or glued to the rim of the mitre.
If you're making it solid rather than translucent you could maybe do something with thin EVA foam covered by fabric... But I don't have a pattern for that.
