Well that was nice wasn’t it; COS’s launch of “Open Sky”, a small series of big sculptures by Palm Springs artist Phillip K Smith 111 at Milan’s bella Mille Palazzo Isimbardi was an airyelegant treat on our first trueblue sparkly spring day in Italy. It was a presser, ostensibly, but with the air of an arty picnic about it too. Journos and sundries drifted across the Palazzo’s lush uncut lawns speckled with white daisies and studded with fat beanbags into which we were invited to sink for a paper-bagged lunchette. Lovely doesn’t cover it. Smith’s sculptures were the artful framework for it all; a gigantic mirrored flange in the palazzo forecourt reflecting its classic colonnade, ancient cobbles and blue sky above, and a smaller set of works - zigzagged mirror stacks on slender legs - spaced around the garden and reflecting you, if you liked, or the fluttery green garden all around.
