People want to sand down the mouthwashing characters to make them more consumable. Make Curly a good guy who did nothing wrong, Swansea a papa bear who would attack Jimmy with an axe if he knew, make Anya keep the baby and have Curly help her raise it?? 🤮
Everyone in Mouthwashing is flawed to some degree but most of all Curly and Jimmy. Curly is genuinely grey, tries to be the boss that's your friend but lets everyone get away with shit because he wants to be liked and can't put his foot down when it fucking counts. Was he manipulated and emotionally abused by Jimmy? Probably, yes. But he also failed in his responsibilities as a Captain. These two things can coexist and neither should be glossed over in favour of the other.Swansea did know about Anya's assault. For at least a couple of months. What did he do? Nothing. He's not flawless. But also I'd argue: it's not his place. Attacking someone with an axe is traumatising, he shouldn't have to take such radical steps.
Curly should have put his foot down.
But also, often overlooked; it's a critique of capitalism. Pony Express employees are only allowed 5 hrs of rest a night. They're several months in of not getting nearly enough sleep, showering using water that isn't safe to drink, and facing pay getting docked as a group whenever one person makes a mistake.
Mouthwashing is a masterpiece thats best experienced when people aren't sanding off the rougher parts of characters. I have a lot more opinions. But hey, that's just my two cents.
exactly, you are really getting onto something! especially about curly, because we do not know what his and jimmy's relationship actually is, and i feel like his character really shows the bad sides of always being a people pleaser, to a dangerously enabling degree.
but as we only see jimmy and curly's relationship on the tulpar and not before, we do not know. and sometimes focusing on the characters and not the bigger picture, as fandom is one to do, there is definitely something lost. as you mentioned. the critique of capitalism is right there. calling pony express just . space amazon does not engage with what the fuck is right there

I went to my local pride event recently (it's a thing held in the local public gardens every year) and the first year I went it was just. A rainbow party for straight families?? This year, though, I got to visit as part of my job. They were selling bi, pan, lipstick lesbian, trans and aCE FLAGS. There was a support stand for trans and nonbinary people that gave me a pin reading "my pronouns are they/them/thiers". I got to hug an ace spiderman cosplayer. Local pride was healing this year :)
Hap birth
thank you!!!! <3
25,75? Spotify wrapped
25 - “Berceuse, S174b/R57b (2nd version)” by Franz Lizt, performed by Jenő Jandó
75 - “Feld” by Tom Adams
(more instrumental stuff from my study tunes playlist! the Lizst song was because I wanted to listen to “Liebestraum” because I was playing on the piano and that song was on the same album)
