Though László Almásy was real person, the events of The English Patient are fictionalized.

The British Film Institute ranked The English Patient the 55th greatest British Film of the 20th Century, while the American Film Institute ranked the film the 56th Greatest Love Story of All Time.

Ralph garnered his second of three Oscar nominations for his role in the film; the first was for his portrayal of Amon Göth in Schindler's List (1993), and his third for his portrayal of Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in Conclave (2024).

Anthony Minghella's son, Max Minghella, is an actor and has appeared as the character Nick Blaine in the TV series The Handmaid's Tale, which also stars Ralph's younger brother, Joseph Fiennes, as antagonist Commander Fred Waterford.
