while nina was at stanford, vanessa sent at least weekly e-mails informing her about just how much everyone and everything sucked, about her desire to strangle three new people this week and about how much worse the place has gotten ever since nina’s been gone.
since vanessa’s mom never taught her much spanish, she studied it alongside nina. she never went as in depth or got as good at it as nina did but having her help her out and not being stuck doing it all alone really helped her out.
nina is the only one who knows the full extends of the issues with her mom. while it is, unfortunately, somewhat of an open secret around the barrio, nobody but nina has all the details. vanessa doesn’t take anybody except nina (and random one-night stands that she’ll never see again ) back to her apartment because she doesn’t want anybody seeing the kind of environment she lives in. nina, though, she trusts enough.
vanessa turns into the slightly overprotective mom friend around nina. she’s probably threatened every significant other she’s ever had with bodily harm should they hurt her and sends texts asking if she made it home okay after a night out. in return, nina is the only person vanessa readily lets her own guards down around without a fight as well.
