5 Reasons Why LDR’s Suck

We’ve already talked about what makes a long-distance relationship good, so it’s time to flip the switch and discuss the absolute worst parts of being in an LDR😭. Hopefully, some of you will find this list supportive instead of depressing. Make sure to leave a comment below if I missed anything!

1) You Don't Get To See Them (In Person)

This one is probably the most obvious, seeing as it’s implied in the name: long-distance. This is especially hard if you see your partner as your best friend, as now you have two relationships that you are unable to see in person. Not only are you missing out on all of the cutesy-relationship stuff, but you’re also missing out on all of the things close friends get to do too. Long-distance can mean a bunch of things; oceans apart, states apart, or sometimes even just hours apart.

Regardless of your situation, the miles are the obstacle between you and the person that you love. On those really, really tough days where you just want a big hug or to relax while watching a movie with your best friend, those miles can feel like a huge downer.

2) Insecurities

While relationships usually have to deal with this at some point, people in long-distance relationships have the incredibly difficult challenge of dealing with insecurities. This can range from feeling like you aren’t good enough to wait for, that your partner may cheat on you while you’re gone, or that your relationship will simply fade away because you don’t have enough to say to each other. Even the couples with the best communication and trust will have to deal with feelings of doubt, and learning how to effectively voice these concerns is one of the essential parts of growing your relationship.

Lastly, you also have to remember to reassure your partner and tend to their insecurities as well. Every time you forget to call them back or post an Instagram pic of you and that friend from work could send doubt through your partner’s mind. Remember to take the time to reassure each other, so the insecurities don’t end up negatively affecting your relationship.

3) Arguing

No matter how much you love your person, you will argue. It’s a vital part of being a strong and fully-fleshed out individual. The hard part is not knowing how to move on after the argument is done. There’s no hugging it out, no “I’m sorry” kiss, and definitely no way to turn on a movie and completely forget about it. Body language accounts for 55% of personal communication elements, meaning that people (consciously or subconsciously) take in body language more than any other form of communication while speaking to others.

Without body language, you’re left with just the words you say and the tone of how you say them. Because of this, every word you say during an argument becomes extremely important. “I hate you” with a goofy grin and a kiss on the cheek is way different than a simple “I hate you”. Arguments can be amplified over the phone as well. Without the usual physical cues from your partner indicating they are joking, tense, upset, or happy, it can be easy to cross a line you didn’t know was there.

4) Wifi Problems/Time Zone

I put these two in the same category because I think the general area of frustration is the same: When you’ve waited the entire day to talk to your person but the second you get on the call, some outside force makes you unable to speak to that person. In one case, the ‘outside force’ is the wifi connection, and on the other, it’s the inconvenient cycle of the sun and moon.

This can be particularly frustrating when you and your partner are in the middle of discussing something deep or important, and out of nowhere, the wifi cuts out, or you have to go to work. This can, unfortunately, make you or your partner feel dejected – no one wants to have to repeat their heart-wrenching venting session three times over.
