Most colleges do have a set of classes you need to take to complete your major, but I still recommend trying to take a few classes (if you have the space in your schedule) that are genuinely interesting to you. While it is important to focus on the classes that will pertain to your major and future career, college is supposed to be enjoyable and taking fun or interesting classes can make you more motivated and encouraged to work.
Take the number of classes that works best for you. Even if other people are taking tons of classes, what really matters is how well you do in each class, not how many classes you’re taking. Some people may be able to effectively manage taking a lot of classes each semester while others may need 1 or 2 less classes to give each course the study time it requires. Both are perfectly fine!

Deferred to 2nd Year: PHYS 101, 1st year English class, and a computational class
First year students get to register before any other years. BUT that doesn't guarantee you will get every class you want ON REGISTRATION DAY. Your exact registration time will be based off of your high school average (converted to BC's grading scale). I think my average was an A- on the US scale, but that is equivalent to a lower number on the BC scale, meaning there was more room for super smarties to get in line ahead of me. I registered during the first half of the second day (out of 3 days).
Tips: **some of these only apply to science students**
make 3-4 worklists that have varied class times (9 and 10 o' clock classes will fill quickly so don't be surprised if you have an 8am class followed by a four hour break)
check the academic calendar to see what classes you are required to take for your major (if you are an international student / live a great distance from Vancouver, don't bank on taking summer classes unless you are ballin in cash. 5 classes per semester is a full course load but is necessary if you want to graduate in 4 years.)
if you are taking 5 classes a semester, try to defer a class that isn't a prereq for second year and take an elective you are interested in instead (I chose Korean because I love a lot of aspects of the culture and have already learned Hanguel.) You want to have a class to look forward to so those boring first year requirements don't bring you down.
if you aren't 150% positive about what you want to major in, try comparing course requirements between majors and take classes that overlap these requirements (it's HIGHLY likely you will decide to change majors at some point so leave your options open)
DON"T WORRY if you do not get into one or two classes when you register OR have a terrible schedule with six hours of class and 4 hour gaps. Register for the waitlist. You will be emailed when spaces become available OR better yet, the waitlist will be converted into a class. Make it part of your daily routine to check for seats and you WILL obtain a reasonable schedule.
if the only available class that fits in your schedule gives you 7 hours of class or free time, register for it anyway. You can switch sections later. (I did this for almost all of my classes. It'll all work out.)
for some reason you can only take one english class per term. Two first year English courses are required to fulfill the Communication Requirement.
credit for AP Biology and Biology HL DO NOT give you credit for BIOL 112 (I dunno why, but that's the way it is.)
in "hardness" level MATH 100/101 (Engineering) > MATH 102/103 (Life Sciences) > MATH 104/105 (Commerce) BUT all of them are interchangeable credit wise
just because you got credit for calculus / biology etc. doesn't mean you're home free --> Lower Level Requirements
if you want to take a language, check to see if you need to complete a placement interview or exam at UBC before registration. (I wasn't able/willing to fly to UBC in the middle of the summer for this, so I just emailed the department head for Korean and filled out the paperwork that way.)
My experience:
I cannot tell you how many times my schedule changed, even before August. After registration, I decided I didn't want to take a full year of Physics, I wanted to take a full year of Calculus (that means one less lab). I switched a GEOB class to a EOSC class, allowing me to have 3 different major options. AND a one credit sustainability course I really wanted to take called SCIE 120 was cancelled due to low enrollment :( My point is that your registration date is almost meaningless. As long as you check the SSC religiously before Sept. 16 (for Term 1 classes) or January 19 (for Term 2 classes) you will get into the courses you want/need while still maintaining a doable schedule.
