A Brief History of Covelong
The Kovalam or Covelong is a small fishing hermit in Chennai, the capital city of TamilNadu, located 40km south of Chennai on the ECR (East Coast Road) on the way to Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram. Once a small port town formed by Saadat Ali, the Nawab of Carnatic, it was acquired by the French in 1746. The French General Laboudonnais landed at this place in 1746, but not before long it was taken over by the British East India Company under the famous Major-general General Robert Clive in 1754 and was annexed to the British Empire in 1752.
Several centuries ago, Covelong was the seat of the power of the Tamil Pallava rulers, who established the Pallava dynasty with Mahabalipuram, the ancient seaport, as the capital, between the 5th and 8th centuries. The rock-cut temple caves at Mahabalipuram are famous world over for their unique structures as they are carved on a single rock. There is a canal running parallel to the Bay of Bengal separating the beach from the mainland and flows into Mahabalipuram from Chennai. Covelong is a popular getaway for water sports lovers that indulge in swimming, windsurfing, etc.
The mesmerising beach of Covelong, located on the coast of Coromandel, is also the home to an ancient Dutch fort, raised during the colonial times. Renamed as the “Fisherman’s Cove Resort”, the fort has been converted into a private luxury resort that is currently owned by the Taj Groups of Hotels. It also houses the ruins of an ancient Catholic church, mosque and an old temple that collectively reverberate a mysterious spiritual aura of the days of yore. The Covelong remained a sleepy fishing village until the early nineties after which the Tourism Department of Tamilnadu took tremendous efforts to turn it into a weekend getaway. The recommended time to visit this ravishing beach is between November and February.
