The diner is barely a 10 minute skate from her house, to be honest, but she needs the extra time to execute her escape. If Leo or her mom catch her sneaking out again she’s dead, or deader than she already is anyway. Things have been kind of tense since she bought home her last report card and the two of them noticed that she was failing US history, even though she’s explained about a hundred times that the teacher for that class is a shit bag who can’t teach to save his life. The corner of her mouth still stings a little from the fallout of the most recent argument on the topic. Even if Arnie doesn’t turn up to hear about how Finland may or may not exist after all, she needs to get out of the house before she goes looses her damn mind completely. River and mom are asleep already, so there’s no worries there, but she can still hear the sound of the tv from the living room, which means going out via the front or back door is out. Even if Leo has fallen asleep in front of whatever shit he’s watching, she has no doubt he’ll wake up just to see her breaking curfew anyway. It’s like a shitty superpower he has.
In an act of what can only be called radical teen rebellion, Jack slides open her bedroom window and drops onto the roof of Leo’s shed outside. From there it’s only a relatively simple matter of lowering her board down and then dropping down herself. Boom. Honestly? She aught to be a fucking Olympian or something.
A snapshot of Jack, half an hour to midnight in a small urban town: messy hair, a bruised mouth, a frown between her eyes that never really goes away. Music blasts through her headphones as she skates to the diner, and is still going when she settles into a booth. Arnie or no, there’s not a chance in hell that she’s going back home tonight.
