Sustainably caught Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs on the Island Lady out of Dundalk, MD For a blue crab to be considered sustainably caught the crabs are sorted on the boat and checked to see if they are 'light.' A 'light' crab is a hollow crab that hasn't completely developed and doesn't have much meat inside its shell. Not all crabbers do this, there's a lot of push back from the crabbing community because they get money for every crab no matter if there is meat in the crab or not. If all crabbers put there light crabs back more crabs would have the opportunity to mate and produce more crabs. Eventually there would be more crabs in the Chesapeake Bay. #covesidecrabs #nationalaquarium #nationalaquariumbaltimore #heathermoran #sustainable #bluecrabs #traceability (at Patapsco River)
