“Tex, stop being so brooding. You’re scaring everyone away.” Charlie said turning to the stadium.
Eyes and murres of people staring at Tex’s figure. He Tex sighed “Why did you bring me here again?”
“You’ve never been to a football game. It’s the first home game that the Devils have.”
“Who are they playing again?”
“Red Rebels.”
The Devils’ bus just pulled up. It was minor league, so everyone was calm and not like the NFL. Less hectic and more down to earth. Players had a walk, but they didn’t mind it because of the fans. They ranged from Bulls, to Boxers and German Shepherds. Most of the players were built, except for the line men. The line men had more, let’s just say meat to them.
Tex’s eyes were drawn to them. There was a Longhorn wearing a simple blue shirt with some jeans and the team’s sponsored shoes. Tex was drawn to him because of his blue eyes. The Longhorn yells “Who’s ready for the Northern Devils to wipe house with some Rebels?”
He seemed to be talking to Tex directly. The roar of the crowd drowned out anything else he wanted to say. Charlie started to follow the crowd of people pulling Tex along.
~~~
After buying tickets Charlie laid out the plan. Tex would go to the concession stands and get some food while Charlie would save the seats.
Tex sighed “Got it. Anything else?”
“There’s a store if you want to get a jersey or something to remember your first football game!” Charlie sounded to excited for Tex.
Tex nodded wishing he could see that handsome Longhorn again. His blue eyes stayed with Tex. Maybe give him his charm that Tex is known for.
Charlie and Tex entered the stadium. It was an enclosed stadium that has showed it’s age. Two jumbo screens on either side of the end zones and only three levels. Music from Country to Classic Rock was blasting.
“This isn’t half bad.” Said Tex.
Tex realized that Charlie had dashed off to get their seats. Tex sighed and started to walk around to find the concession stands. The first thing he came across was the ‘Fan Zone’.
“How cheesy can they get?” Tex thought to himself.
Tex walked in and the sound was drowned out to only a whisper. The store had jersey lined up on the walls, while the t-shirts and jackets were folded neatly in cabinets that were placed in the center. The cashier was right the door.
“Welcome to the Fan-”
Tex cut the Tabby off “Please, you don’t have to say any of that.”
The Tabby nodded her head. Tex smiled back and continued looking at the jerseys. The blue, gold, and white color scheme caught his eyes. He walked over to a rack of them and started looking for his size.
Someone walked through into the store. He looked like a cat mixed with a coyote. He had the round ears and tail of a cat, but the fur of a coyote. He had a stripe of green hair, almost like a mohawk, but not standing up. His green eyes and nose matched his hair. He had a two black distinct marks between his eyes. Brown paws with a stripe of black on his wrist. He wore a grey long sleeved shirt with light blue jeans and converse.
The Catyote walked over to the next cloth rack near Tex. Tex couldn’t help but check him out. He was tiny, but in a cute way. He looked over some of the jerseys and sighed. By now, Tex was checking out the Catyote long enough for him to notice. He looked over at Tex. Tex responded with a smile and a wink. A flood of red filled the Catyote’s face. He blushed so easily, which embarrassed him even more causing him to blush more.
“I-uh-My-Oh God.” Were the only things that he could say.
Tex chuckled a little “My name is Tex. I haven’t seen you around the town often. Are you from the visiting team?”
“Oh, um, I’m actually seeing a friend. He plays for the Devils.”
“That’s cool! May I ask his name?”
The Catyote replied “Cash Mackey. He’s a linebacker. Very big Longhorn. Can’t miss him.”
Tex ears perked up “Was he the one that yelled in the parking lot?”
“Yep. He is always the one getting the crowd pumped up.” The Catyote said smiling.
Tex smiled back. He was enjoying himself.
Tex shifted his weight “So what’s your name?”
“Nixel, but most of my friends call me Nix.”
“The name fits you.”
“Thanks.” Nix says shyly.
Tex picked a jersey with the numbers '00’ on it. He put it up to his chest making sure it would fit him.
“So what do you think?” Tex asked.
“It fits you well.” Nix laughed.
Tex caught what Nix was referring back to. He laughed as well.
“Well I better get to the concession stands before the game.” Tex sighed “I’ll give you my number.”
Tex walked over to the cashier and paid for his jersey. He tore a piece from his receipt and grabbed a pen. He wrote his number down and handed it to Nix.
“Text me when you’re free.” Tex winked.
Again, Nix blushed and tried to get some words across his lips. He failed again.
Tex waved goodbye when leaving the store. The Tabby after listening to all of this spoke up.
“You just got lucky!” She laughed.
~~~
Tex came back with two hotdogs and two sodas with some chips. Charlie was too busy taking the game in.
“Hey,” Tex said “I bought the food.”
They were at the end of the end zone where the two teams mixed. Red and blue were mixed. Charlie and Tex stuck out like a sore thumb.
Charlie noticed Tex’s bag with the jersey in it “So that’s why you took so long! You got a jersey!”
“Yes and met someone new.” Tex smirked.
Charlie just shook his head. He was too hungry to ask questions about it.
Tex’s phone buzzed and he pulled it out. It was an unknown number with the message:
Is this Tex?
Tex: Nix? You’re already free?
Nix: No, Cash doesn’t play until the second quarter so I have some free time.
Tex: How do you know Cash?
Nix: We go way back. Saved my ass from getting in trouble multiple times.
Tex: In a sexual way? ;)
Nix: Hey! We just go back!
Tex: Sure you do.
Nix: There was this one time, but that was in high school and we refuse to talk about it.
Tex: If you don’t talk about it, why talk about it to me?
Nix: Uh…
Nix: Cash’s number is 63.
Tex: You brought it up don’t change subjects on me now.
Nix: Fine.
Nix: We we’re in high school, and we went to see a movie. We kissed, but it didn’t work out so we’re just friends.
Tex: Friends with benefits? ;)
Nix: >:/
After Kickoff and in the middle of eating his food, Tex was checking out the players. When the second quarter came around, Rebels had the ball. Out on the home side was Cash putting on his helmet. The Devils just returned the ball and he was going over the plays. Cash then backed away and ran out to his field along with his other teammates.
Tex: I see him! He’s like you describe.
Nix: Of course. I’ve known him since we were in school!
Tex: Is it because you know him on a deeper level?
Nix: Tex. Stop.
Tex: ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Nix: OMFG xD
Tex: ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Nix: Watch the game you idiot!
Tex put his phone back in his pocket. Charlie was standing looking at the field and heard Tex stand up.
Charlie asked “Who were you talking to?”
Tex just smirked.
Charlie shook his head and rolled his eyes “Just watch the game.”
The play started. Cash broke through the line and tackled the Running Back before he could gain any yards. A roar filled the stadium. Cash threw his fist up in celebration.
Tex and Charlie cheered along with the fans, screaming at the top of their lungs.
~~~
It was 19-16 Devils. Everyone was walking out, very exhausted and cheering. Both Charlie and Tex were dragging their feet. They just left the stadium when Tex heard Nix from behind.
“Tex! Wait!” He shouted over the crowd.
Tex turned to see Cash standing by Nix. He was twice the size of Nix.
“So,” Cash said “You were the one Nix was talking to. Not a bad pick!”
“Cash!” Nix scolded.
Tex walked over to where you they were standing. Charlie followed with Tex introducing him introducing him. Cash was in the same outfit before the game, with his his bag with his equipment thrown over his shoulder.
“Were you the one that looked all gloomy before the game?” Cash asked.
“Yes. I had to walk.” Tex lied.
Cash let out a huge laugh “I know when someone is lying, especially in football!”
Nix raised his eyebrows and Cash just rolled his eyes.
“What Nix is trying to say if you guys want to hang out with us this weekend. He’s too shy to ask.” Cash shifted his weight.
“You free this weekend Charlie?” Tex asked.
Charlie replied “Yes. I may be late with my job, but it should be fine.
“Well!” Cash smiled “That settles it! We’ll meet at my place! It’s a nice farm not far from here. Nix will text everything you need. Until then!”
Everyone said goodbye and headed their separate ways. As Tex and Charlie was driving off, Tex got a from Nix. It was a selfie of Cash and Nix, smiling. Tex couldn’t wait for the weekend.
