AN: I admit this is not my best work but I wanted to get something in after being absent for a while. This is a colourblind soulmate AU and it’s for UshiTsuki week. A pairing that I am too deep in...too deep. I only hope my characterization is okay.
The first time you see your soulmate, you’ll lose your ability to see colour. The second time you meet your soulmate, you’ll regain a colour of their most defining feature. Only when you affirm your feelings and kiss your soulmate will you regain all the colours you have lost.

Ushijima Wakatoshi remembered very well the day everything turned black and white. He was young, around ten years old when it happened.
The cross-section, though not as busy as Tokyo’s main street, was still pretty packed and he was in a rush. When his vision suddenly turned monochromatic, he was surprised but there was no time to stop and look around to see if his potential soulmate would also pause and search. He had volleyball practise to get to after all. Although he couldn’t lie, he did return to the same cross-section afterwards to see if his potential soulmate lingered in the area. He also made it a regular occurrence every month, hoping he would be able to meet the other. And if anyone in his team asked why he left practise slightly early on a certain day every month, well he only told them the truth whether they believed him or not.

It was during Ushijima’s final volleyball match against Kitagawa Daiichi that he noticed a difference in his vision. Where everything used to be just black and white, there were now different tints of yellow. The change was so sudden that he nearly missed a spike but he didn’t clear the net, which gave the opposing team a point. Apologizing to his team and coach, Ushijima took a deep breath to focus. He had no time to worry about the sudden reappearance of yellow. After all, he had a match to win.
After the tournament ending ceremony, Ushijima lingered around the doors of the gymnasium hoping that he would be able to figure out who his potential soulmate was. However, if the person was in the audience, then he would have less of a chance as the audience usually left earlier. Though if he was lucky, his potential soulmate would also be searching for him. Unfortunately, luck was not on his side and he returned home slightly dejected at another missed opportunity.

Ushijima was surprised when he was pulled aside to the washroom by Karasuno’s number eleven after the awards ceremony for Miyagi representative Spring High tournament. The tall blonde had what seemed like a glare on his face, and his fingers were crossed in front of him. It took a few seconds of watching the blonde open and close his mouth before Ushijima decided that he did not have the time to wait for a conversation and excused himself.
“Wait,” The blonde said causing Ushijima to turn around. It took another few seconds before the blond blurted out, “I think we might be soulmates.”
Ushijima could only blink as he tried to process this. He gave the middle blocker a once over. Sure the other had a tint of yellow in the hair but was that really a defining feature? It was when he stared into the other’s eyes that he noticed that they were bright, not exactly yellow but more like gold.
Great, Ushijima thought. Even after giving up on ever finding his soulmate, someone had to appear? and bring his hopes up.
“Why do you think I’m the one?” Ushijima asked.
“A magazine.” The blonde replied. Ushijima cocked his head and when the other realized that he was going to explain, he sighed and did so.
Tsukishima Kei, as the blonde finally told Ushijima his name, first lost his ability to see colour when he was eight and given by the fact that Ushijima is third year while Tsukishima is a first year, the timing makes sense. He then went on about how he lingered at the cross-section until his brother had to drag him home. It was then, a few years later when he was flipping through a volleyball magazine that colour appeared on one of the images which just so happened to be one with only Ushijima. An olive that only covers Ushijima’s eyes and the lighter part of his hair.
It never occurred to Ushijima that an encounter with one’s soulmate didn’t just have to be a physical meeting but either way, it wasn’t really important. He then asked why Tsukishima didn’t confront him sooner, which caused the blonde to look to the side, pink lightly dusting his cheeks. He mumbled that he had thought that Ushijima was out of his league.
Ushijima lightly chuckled which only caused Tsukishima further embarrassment. The two then stood in silence for a bit. Ushijima had to admit, he never thought beyond finding his soulmate. And if he were to be honest, he had no idea what to say or do at the moment. Thankfully it was Tsukishima who broke the silence, asking if he wanted to try the dating thing. Ushijima gave him an affirmative nod which put a small smile on Tsukishima’s face. The two then exchanged phone numbers and agreed to call one another sometime on the weekend to make plans.
Tsukishima was the first to go, leaving Ushijima to stare at the new number in his cell phone for bit. He smiled. Even though the loss to Karasuno was frustrating, he had to admit that something good came out of it.
It was a few hours later after the 100 practise serves that Ushijima remembered that he needed a kiss to fully see colour again.

It took a few years before Ushijima Wakatoshi finally got that kiss. It was after a major match for Japan’s volleyball team. Ushijima had scored the winning spike, and later he was pulled into a slightly dark hall and kissed to the point of breathlessness. And although it was amazing to see Tsukishima in colour, he was still very much captivated by the golden eyes of his soulmate.
