The grottos of Chihuahua
The state of Chihuahua is increasingly seen as one of the most attractive places in Mexico for adventure tourism, and some of the most mysterious places it offers for this type of tourism are underground in a series of stunning underground caverns. We are talking about the Nombre de Dios caves and the caves of Coyame, two places that await you to be explored when you take one of the flights to Chihuahua.
Nombre de Dios Caves
The Nombre de Dios caves are located in the capital of Chihuahua, just 15 minutes from the Historic Center, so you can find them by just going down Sacramento and Monte Albán, until you get there. Once you get to the Sierra Nombre de Dios, where the caves get their name, the adventure will begin. They were inaugurated for the public on October 25 in the year 2000, and consist of 12 major chambers and five small rooms, in total it is almost a kilometer and a half in length that must be traversed when entering here.
Once you enter, you will descend to a depth of 82 meters so you can admire the stalactites and stalagmites that impact everyone after millions of years forming, and as is customary in other similar sites, each rock formation has a name in accordance with what they resemble. Here you can see Don Quixote, the Tower of Pisa and many more.
Coyame Grottos and its millions of years
Specifically, what makes Coyame grottos different from any other in Mexico is what it has inside; of course, you will find stalagmites and stalactites with capricious shapes and properly baptized, which by themselves are very attractive. However, something you will see in this underground network and that you won´t see in other places, are some ancient relics, we are talking about dinosaur fossils.
These dinosaur bones petrified and embedded in their limestone walls are, furthermore, proof that Chihuahua was once submerged under water. That is why access to the Coyame grottos remains limited, partly to preserve these historic artifacts and in another, to maintain the humidity that keeps the rock formations.
Although its journey is somewhat long, it is also recognized as being a simple route for anyone to carry out. It is worth mentioning that before starting your tour you should descend a depth of 84.3 meters, so wear comfortable clothes, and once you arrive don´t forget to enjoy all the wonders and strange rock formations that are here. In total, there are 17 rooms that make up the route of 330 meters within the grottos, for access groups of 15 to 20 people led by a guide with an hour duration, to enter you must pay at the box office fee of 50 pesos per person with several times to enter.
These caves, besides being a wonder of nature, are key pieces to know the past of our planet and to understand even more its behavior. So definitely, visiting these caves should be on your itinerary when you take one of the flights to Chihuahua.
