very interesting at this stage in the story that caleb sometimes oscillates between using the names "nott" and "veth." like, when they were in the happy fun ball and nott was seriously entertaining making a deal with halas, at his wit's end he called her veth to get her attention, but also walking into the basement of the cathedral when she's under obann's control, to himself he calls her veth when he thinks about how worried he is for her. i don't have a real conclusion to this, but considering the importance of names to caleb in how he expresses affection and devotion, it's just particularly notable. maybe especially because he is the only member of the party who calls her veth at all before her transmogrification
Eleven things I noted about CR2E86 “The Cathedral” and the Talks Machina about it :
the bizarre coincidence of watching the episode after the ExU:Calamity finale, where Matt and Brennan used almost the same decor of their grandiose maps... also all of the talks about the Betrayer Gods and Ioun and the Divergence... anyway I got ExU:Calamity on my brain, can't you tell
I really hope Annie Lennox is a Critter as well.
The battle map is SO PRETTY !! I don't like the Catholic Church as a structure, but they really went off witht the stained glass, and I love me some good stained glass.
The image of Caleb's Cat Claw breaking through the window : awesome.
ASHLEY'S BAAAAAAACK !!! I love that she does a victory lap across the studio, even though right now Yasha is fighting against the Mighty Nein.
Oh no, the imagery of Yasha attacking Beau, and then stabbing her almost-corpse on the ground (taking 2 death saves) 'evokes an image you've seen once before"... the parallelism with Molly...
Caduceus is the MVP of this fight. They did it, those crazy kids did it, now Yasha's free and "There's nothing but the storm, vengeance and hope" (what a good line !)
I don't have anything clever to write, this fight was just very tense.
Whaaaaaat ???? Obann the Punished ???? Liam and Laura, in very small voices : "Did shit just get worse ?"
Huh, interesting, Matt compared Obann and Yasha to the Purple Man and Jessica Jones, a show that I liked very much - even though the Purple Man was FUCKING CREEPY AS HELL - and was very sad about when they were canceled
Oh, wow, can you imagine, if they haven't dispelled the charm on Yasha ? And Obann had managed to break the fane ?? Matt saying Yasha would have become an evil NPC is so crazy to think about.
"Isolation is an incubator that turns mistakes into habits." Oh wow Brian. WOW. No joke, I'm gonna think about that line for the rest of my life.
Ok I’m knocking out a bunch of quick thoughts all at once. I’ve gotten super behind myself again unfortunately, but I really think I’ll enjoy having this reaction diary for myself someday so I’m keeping at it! (and I think there are at least a couple humans out there who actually read these? If you do, let me know!) Ok lets go:
The moment with the Krin soldiers felt like such a solemn turning point somehow. I feel like this small moment of respect and influence was sort of the start of this new era of The Nien’s journey where they move through the world as known entities with some amount of pull.
Caleb bursting through the glass with his paw is so friggin cinematic, ujst like this whole sequence was. This is the kinda thing that makes me wish to be watching live, cause there had to have been so much great art of that moment!
Yasha got saved so early in this ep! I really thought they’d have to fight her for longer, but I like it this way actually
PUMAT SWOLE. thats it thats the entire comment, im love him.
God Obann’s final form was so upsetting to contemplate. Nasty.
Wow, so I put on The Cathedral episode of Critical Role just to play in the background while I (attempt to) clean my apartment, since I’ve seen it an embarrassing amount of times already, and turns out it aired almost exactly one year ago. The week before Thanksgiving.
Amazing to see how far we’ve come, and how much these characters have grown, and it’s also just so wonderful to have Ashley back permanently.
