Brody looked at Curran as he led him back to the dorm. Curran had been unusually quiet that afternoon.
“So, any more…hockey…NHL…interviews? Or…whatever it is?” Brody asked, looking up at Curran, who immediately tensed at the word interviews. He nodded quickly.
“Yeah, yeah,” he mumbled, shutting the door behind them. He turned back to Brody, smiling a little.
“Soon, but not tonight.” he said, something in his tone. A tiredness, and something else Brody couldn’t name. Like if Brody knew something, it would all go down.
Brody sat at his bed, pulling the covers up to his chest.
“But why do they need so much?” Brody asked Curran, frowning. Curran shrugged, and began looking around in his wardrobe for something.
“Just…wanna know about me,” he murmured, and Brody could tell something was definitely wrong. Curran pulled out his hoodie, sitting next to Brody.
“But why? Why do they want to know about you?” Brody asked, and Curran blinked slowly, inhaling.
“Because, it's the media. I’m the next big thing for them, Brody.” he sighed. “I can’t control it.” he finished. Brody frowned deeper. Before he could ask another question, Curran tossed his hoodie at him. Brody’s eyebrows knitted together, he couldn’t speak for a few seconds.
“Enough with the questions. You get to keep it. You like hoodies, anyways, and I won't be in college much longer.” Curran said, his smile coming back. Brody’s chest fluttered, and he couldn’t help but smile back, as a looming suspicion filled his stomach. He was happy, but he didn’t feel right about this.
Brody hugged the hoodie to his chest, leaning into Curran.
“Thanks, thanks a lot.” Brody said, grinning at Curran, who leaned his head against Brody’s head.
I won't be in college much longer.
It was true, Curran was going into the NHL, but Brody just felt…wrong. Scared, even.
What if Curran meant it more than just leaving college?
Brody wanted to say something. He wanted to say ‘hey, how are you?’ Or ‘are you doing okay?’ But he just couldn't bring himself to do it. The words wouldn’t go to his mouth, wouldn't form beyond his thoughts. He just stayed there, tucked in Curran’s arms like second nature. The hoodie felt heavy in his arms.
I hope you’re doing okay, Brody thought. He meant it. Even if he couldn’t say it.
