Craft Lab Journal!
Fall 2011 Craft Lab was a cross-pollination of textile, fashion, and environmental systems thinking, inspired by ecological principles found in permaculture and regenerative design applied to restoration, repair, and its inherent connection to ”craft.”
Harvest Oakland
Using local and seasonal decor, dinner, and dye materials. We gathered for a very special thanksgiving "Dinner to Dye For" at the California College of the Arts Harvest Oakland Community Garden.
Nettle tea gathered and dye.
We savored the sweet smell of fig leaves saturating fabric with warmth of yellows and light greens.
Foraged blooming rosemary and meyer lemon cake. The ingredients made dyes of dark teals from the rosemary and a natural bleach of lemon for patterning, which creates a citrus resist.

Harvest Oakland
Late Fall chicory and persimmon tasting with, Craft Lab, California College of the Arts graduate class. We got to share in an abundant and seasonal harvest and tasting with the lovely, Kelsie Kerr, slow food luminary, in preparation for expanding our plant-based color, we got to expand our taste palette and savor the ripeness of the Mid-November moment.
Seed Bombs
Inspired by Permacouture's "Seeds to Sew"project, the students harvested dye and fiber plants gone to seed in the CCA Oakland Garden, where we are currently working on establishing a seed lending library for fiber and dye plants.

My Craft Lab graduate class at California College of the Arts had the great joy of working with Julia Parker, her daughter, Lucy, her daughter, Ursula, and her daughter Naomi. We harvest willow from the basin of Mono Lake...where restoration and cultured care-brought back the craft and ecology of land.
