Infamous IPA by Infamous Brewing Co.
I went to Craft Pride for the first time with my dad as the latest in our Beer Thursday outings. It's a bar on Rainey Street in Austin, a cool little stretch on the edges of Downtown that has mostly bars and restaurants in renovated Craftsman bungalows and is in many ways the anti-6th Street. Craft Pride only serves Texas-made craft beer so I knew I had to check it out eventually. The beer selection was quite extensive, some I've tried, some I've heard about and have wanted to try and even a few I did not know about before walking in. Unfortunately, the bartenders were assholes. The first guy who served us seemed really annoyed and disinterested. The second guy got offended when we didn't share his opinion about certain beers. I didn't think we were being mean-spirited about it. He just didn't like to be challenged. This is the side of the craft beer world I really don't like. I know I can be a beer snob sometimes but I hope I don't come across as elitist and snooty like the people at Craft Pride do. The attitude at this place is just really uninviting. I don't like being talked down to, especially when I do know what I'm talking about. I'm now way more inclined to just go to Bangers a couple doors down. They have just as good of a beer list and are civil to customers at the very least. Okay, rant over. Time to get to reviewing this beer. Infamous is a new-ish brewery here in Austin and their beers were the special at Craft Pride when we went. I've tried the Hijack Untraditional Cream Ale from Infamous and was surprised at how much I liked it. See my review for more details. Infamous IPA is just as good but in different ways obviously. To me, it seems like the perfect cross between an American IPA and an English IPA. Infamous IPA has a very smooth body for an India Pale Ale. The malt profile is fairly noticeable (like an English IPA) and has some biscuit fresh-baked bread, and grassy characteristics. The hop bitterness is substantial but not ultra-powerful and there are definite citrus and pine hop flavors (like an American IPA). The balance between malt and hops is pretty spot on perfect. Infamous IPA is a really good beer and one of the better maltier IPAs I've had thus far. I'd definitely drink it again, perhaps not at Craft Pride though.
