First trip back to the @mfaboston since I left for college so I had to visit John Singer Sargent’s The Daughters of Edward Darley Bait and it’s vases- the actual vases depicted in the painting. Discovering this set as a child was a HUGE turning point in the way I thought about art. Abstractly, I *knew* that paintings represented real objects but somehow seeing the vases next to the painting allowed me to relate to the composition in a new way. I was dwarfed by the ceramics the same way the girls were and the room in the painting took on physical dimensionality. Now, as a maker of objects and a lover of craft, I think I can see why it felt so epic. The objects we surround ourselves with define our experiences in similar, overlapping and completely distinct ways fine art does. Just me?? #fineart #craft #crafttheory #painting #ceramics #whatisthefourthwall #howibecameme #art #museum (at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston)
Pranking yourself
"...craftsmanship draws no attention to itself; it lies beneath notice, allowing other qualities to assert themselves in their fullness...Craft is a means of getting to a finished form well. Like a hunter in a snowy ground, it must obscure its own tracks"
Glenn Adamson Thinking Through Craft
Apparently craft isn't a creative industry. You are a bunch of idiots, Government. Whilst semantics don't always matter, by not classifying craft as part of the creative industries, funding could be cut to businesses and education. Whilst I believe everything around us has been crafted, even the mass-manufactured goods we have, craft in this instance applies to those working by hand to create. The key here is in that word 'create'. You cannot be creative just by thinking about something, now can you Government. Sort yourselves out.
