Blade Runner

Blade runner is a cult classic film that many people love and I can see why. Its tone is very dreary and dull, but at the same time it’s very oddly mystical. The start of the film is very echo-y, and very long, there was a noticeable amount of opening credits that was odd, but most of the movie is very drawn our anyway. Visually the movie was very very pretty, it had really nice colours and a very nice setting, and it looked like a world I would want to explore. The whole atmosphere is really interesting too, along with the concept of robotic people, it makes the air feel both magical and tense. But the line delivery of most of the characters is pretty dull, I understand they’re supposed to be very casual, but it felt flat when mixed with how long the scenes are.

Story-wise it was very confusing, I kept getting lost, the strange howling confused me and the sound mixing had the ambiance too loud so some of the monologues I could hardly hear. And the love between the protagonist and Sean Youngs’ character was very awkward and I didn’t get it- they had no chemistry as characters it felt forced, but so do most couples in sci fi movies. And apparently Harrison Ford has big angry issues with his character supposedly being a replicant which is funny.

This was a task I missed as I was sick, but the task of that week was to create characters out of rocks!  I took some rocks, big and small, and changed the angle round until I found one I was happy with, then I drew the rock in the square I had chosen. I drew little camera notches around the rock to indicate what part of the character is a rock and what is something I added on later.  I then looked at it until I saw something, if I hadn’t already, and drew it on.

Characters feature: a strange frog, cyclops person,cartoon dog (looks like the one from inspector gadget), fish cutlets, big teeth, and sea monsters.

This drawing task was to practice point perspective, I personally don’t like point perspectives, at least not of buildings and structures. I much prefer free hand work to having to use a ruler with every pen stroke. 

The third image of this set is based on the movie we watched earlier that day (Mad Max: Fury Road) as i was trying to make it more fun for me personally.

The first two images were a drawing task where we were given images of zoomed in photos of mini figures, then traced over the top of them in fine liner/biro. I shaded mine using lines with differing distances between them. We then layered them on top of each other, and photocopied it.

The second two images were a task where we’d find photos of faces in magazines, and cut it out, then scribbled some black oil pastel onto the back of the section we cut out, then placed it onto some card and drew over the face with a continuous line technique. The second image of the bottom two is the art paired with a song that I was listening to at the time.

This weeks task was to draw a weird statue-thing made from wood, chairs, tape, and boxes all stacked on a metal trolley. For some of these we used rulers and stencils, most we did whilst not looking (blind), and we changed up our drawing tool whenever we were told to. Tools used were: large marker, small marker, biro, fine liner, graphite and light inkwash over the top.

A small addition in the end was placing cut out words from torn out book pages onto some of the smaller sketches.

The task for today was to make a weird scenery/world collage out of bits and pieces from magazines and newspapers. I picked the savannah scene but it didn’t fill the whole page, so i placed a nice underwater scene on the other side, with an optical illusion ‘portal’ in the center.  I cut up some human features and placed them on or with animal or plant to make weird little characters. I put word bubbles at the top to fill in space the eyeball butterflies I also used to fill space but I do like the concept of them quite a lot.

Our drawing task for today was to make ‘monster people’, we did this by doing some blind continuous line artwork. I used photos of Craig’s (my tutor) family members (we think) and only looked at them as i drew them. Surprisingly I really like how they turned out, I’ve had lots of positive comments on my line work.

The second lot of images is just something I felt like doing, I really like drawing gross people and monsters, so i took the same photos and the same general layout and turned the people into weird monster people.
