Ducklings are born looking different from adult ducks. Duckling mortality is higher in the first 10 days after hatching due to cold weather, lack of food, parasitic diseases and attacks from predators. They are also vulnerable because they cannot fly away or swim fast enough to scape predators. Unlike adult ducks, ducklings do not have waterproof down.
