today’s funky frog of the day: the crawfish frog (Rana areolata)!!! these friends live in the central united states. their name comes from their habitat- they live inside the burrows of crayfish! i’m not too sure how the crayfish feel about this.

The crawfish frog [Lithobates areolatus; formerly Rana areolata] is not only a close relative to the gopher frog, but it fulfills a similar niche as well. These frogs are named for their habit of sheltering in abandoned crawfish burrows during the day, emerging at night to hunt and breed. They will also take advantage of other animal burrows, as well as artificial structures, such as sewer lines and drainage pipes. Images taken in Illinois by Jeremy Schumacher.
Fred is a very cute frog. I mean, just look at the way he wipes his face after eating his bug.

Well just so y'all know all of the good reptile and amphibian friends from the herpetology lab will be on haitus through the summer while I’m away from college but they will be returning in the fall.
